The 10ga mould I ordered from Brooks arrived today with a couple of 30:1 cast slugs. I haven't had a chance to mic or weight the slug, but it looks great to me, just wish I would have ordered the handles a little sooner. Hopefully will be casting in a couple of days. Sorry about the picture quality, I gotta get a real camera.

That is an impressive slug. I'm sure it will be well worth all your effort. Now for some range/hunting reports.

With 30:1 alloy this slug weighs 725 grains. Top driving band is .756 & skirt is a couple of thousands larger. Hollow base is .45" deep, just over 50% of the .85" boolit length. I modified a set of old RCBS handles and they fit fine. Going to start casting in the morning and hope to have a couple dozen loaded slugs to take to the range on Monday. I will be using Fed Hulls & Primers, I4759 powder, BPI gas seals and circle fly 10ga wads. I am going to load with a solid wad column, as this technique works very nicely in my 12ga. Slug will be roll crimped on my drill press.

My kid is bring me a digicamera so IF I can figure out how to use it I may actually be able to post decent pictures.

Pics later, data first.
Powder I 4759
725 grain HB slug, .775" OD
(2) BPI gas seals
.125 10ga nitro cards for correct crimp height
Roll crimp with drill press
Rem Hulls
Standard Fed 209 primers
Charge - grains Velocity - fps
60 <1,000 (hit the clear button on the chrony before logging data)
65 1,086
70 1,133
75 1,202
80 1,317
83 1,315 (chrony interference from flyin' gas seals & cards!)
86 1,389
89 1,446 (would have been a good time to stop!)
92 1,480
95 1,551 (holy **** Batman!)

For comparison

Factory Fed 1.75 oz slug - 1,181 fps
Handloaded Profino 700 grain, 10ga slug with 40g of Blue Dot - 1,168 fps
Holes in targets at 60 yards are round!
I had about +/- .75% weight deviation in my slugs (+/- 5 grains). As I learn how to cast with this mould I am hoping to get reduce this variable by a bunch.
Hulls eject okay and primers are fine but the hottest two loads are showing a bit of bulge at the unsupported ejector notch. Going to try the next batch with a "cushion" built into the wad column and see if that helps matters.
Recoil with 95g of 4759 is on par with a 416 rigby. It isn't a sharp slap type recoil more of get out my way recoil.
4759 ignites perfectly with the standard Fed 209s.

Hello Brother BikerBeans, very impressive results and I'm happy for your success, I would say your load of 89 gr is just about right and next try to different OP
wad for better obturation.
When ever you get to post some pictures do post the components used picture.

Best of luck.

Ajay,

My son dropped off the digi-camera while I was at the range so I didn't get a lesson on how to operate it. I have attached a fuzzy flip phone pick.

The slug in the center of the pic was recovered after passing through a Dollar General paper plate, 3/8" sheet of OSB and a rather worn railroad tie. Given the +/- 5 grain spread on my slug weights I would list this slug as having 100% weight retention. The fired slug was launched with either 92 or 95 grains of I 4759, only one of the 4 shot group made it through the tie. Max. expanded OD is less than 1".

There are two wad builds.

The one on the right is the one I shot today and is a BPI 10gas seal, .125 10ga nitro card, another gas seal, another .125 card and the 725g .775 slug.

The build on the left is my next try and is a Rem SP10 wad with the petals cutoff, a .125 nitro card and the 725g slug. Depending on level of compression I may add a second nitro card under the slug. I may change this and put a 10ga gas seal under the SP10 wad with a 16 or 20 ga nitro card between them. All depends on total build height so I have enough room to roll crimp without chewing the top off my slug.

Leaving to bow hunt this Friday for a few days so probably no more slug loading and testing until late next week.

Hello Brother BikerBean, I use Fed 209A primers with 4759 powder, but since your test trail has so far been with Fed 209 primer I wonder if it would help if you were to use Fed 209A primers but if you do then drop the charge to 84 gr and come back up gradually just like you have gracefully done so far.
Try incorporating a 1/4 nitro card in between right below the slug, it just might help with a solid foundation.

I'm enjoying your experiment even tho I personally do not have a 10 gauge gun.

Keep it up and play it safe and thanks for sharing.

Best of luck.
