The only data I came across was in the Speer #8 manual - "medium shot shell and handgun powder." Any specific calibers you need data on?

There is also some info in the old Lyman cast bullet handbook in the handgun/revolver section. Not much, but some.

Mostly standard, no magnum cartridges and with standard weight bullets, or lighter than std. 32 long thru 45 colt. The Lyman pistol and revolver handbook, 1st edition has it listed also.

30calflash: I have a can of HS-5 that has been on the shelf forever. I don't have any of the manuals mentioned. Would you give me the starting and max recommended loads for the .45 Colt with a 250g cast bullet?
Many thanks.

I lost my post. HS-5 is also an older Winchester shotgun powder. Unfortunately I have gotten old andcan't rember which powder. It started out "WW" and three numbers followed, I think. CRS

HS-5 is roughly the same burn rate as Hercules Unique. I bought a bunch of it nearly 40 years ago and still have a bit over a pound left......I paid $5.95 for it.

if memory serves it was Winchester 473AA.

I have heard others say it was WW540 but that was HS-6 rather than 5.

Sorry I didn't get back sooner, I'll see if it is listed for your needs.

In the 45 Colt, Lyman listed 8.0 grains for 696 fps with the 454-190 to start topping out at 9.8 grains for 859 fps in their old 3rd edition. It was also used in 38 special, 357 Magnum, and 45 Auto Rim. It seems to be a slower powder, somewhere in between Herco and Blue Dot. They also listed it for some Contender-Ruger only loads with the same boolit in 45 Colt.

The above is what I have, with Ruger/TC loads going higher.

The Speer #10 manual has warmer loads using a mag primer. They were fired in an SAA.

Some of the older published info has been shown to be exceeding industry standards, so you need to go slow here. Using Unique charges should keep you in the safe area, again with standard or lighter weight projectiles for the cartridge in question.

According to this chart, HS-5 is slightly faster burning than Unique, and one step slower than WW473AA....so Wiljen may be right.
