I know from reading past threads that some of you refer to your #3 Rugers with #1 wood to a #2 or a #13. I picked up a #3 today in 45-70, shot some J-words through it for a tryout now its time for some cast, I really like the looks of several rifles shown in other threads where a #3 is wearing #1 wood, I have just done about an hours search on the web for replacement wood and I have not found a thing, anybody got a suggestion on a link or supplier?

I have two 45 caliber rifle molds one a 500 grain Lyman and a 420 grain Lee, I am wanting to work up some loads for the 500 ( I like chunkin that big ol hunk of lead ) anybody shoot these with any good results?

Thanks in advance Rick

I have three of them. You cannot get the wood from Ruger. They require that you send in the gun and they will not put No. 1 wood on a No. 3 -- I have asked them. Last time I checked, Ruger wants $300 or higher (depending on the model).

I have bought the wood in different places. One was 90% inletted from e-Bay. It was OK, but the wood was nothing special. The other was on mark-down at Great American Gunstocks. Also 90% inletted. It was not cheap, but the wood was better. I fitted the other 10% and finished them. There are a couple of other places that provide semi-finished Ruger stocks. Treebone and Gunstocks Inc. are a couple that look good, but I have not tried them.

I don't know where you can buy them finished.

I've delt with Treebone (some time ago) and was very happy with them.

Hi hivoltfl,

Go to

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RUGER-1/

They LIVE for the Ruger #1 & 3 rifles, one guy has about 130 of them!:-D

Drop in at the site. a few guys have extra wood and can steer you to other custom supplyers.

They have been very helpful about teaching me about the Ruger #1:drinks:

I have discovered that Ruger used two other barrel makers tubes, over the years and now they make there own.
Ruger had a nice three screw adjustable trigger & now a two screw type that is a bit-h to adjust.:(

Be well,

Maybe. Maybe not. The No.3 was made in only one barrel contour. However, the No. 1 has been made in several types of barrel contours. I don't know if any of the No. 1's were made in the same contour as the No. 3, but I do know that several of the No. 1's are different from the No. 3. Your odds of getting one to match are probably pretty slim.

Thanks for the links, I went to treebone and I really like the looks of his wood, I think I am gonna go with the select walnut, that will take care of my forearm issues as I get both,

I really like the maple, I have done one stock in maple before and its so hard to work with, I guess that means its not as easy to screw up as it is so hard to remove much at a time.... nawwwwww I am gonna go for the walnut.

Thanks again.
