I acquired a Lee 309-230-5R mold from a member here and can't wait to get cracking with it. I've found data for 7.62x39 and 30-06, but am most interested in this boolit from a single shot contender (14" barrel).

has anyone tried this or a similarly heavy bullet in the 30-30? Making some rough guesses and using a calculator, it should stabilize at lower velocities fine (1-12 twist).

IIRC, I have read that some .30-30 Contender barrels were 1:14", while some newer ones are 1:10" ROT, so depending on which of the two you have, I figure you have a 50/50 chance that it will work well. I have been thinking of picking up a H&R in .30-30 for this same exact purpose. I don't have the 230gr mold yet though, so you're ahead of me. I would say start low to make sure you stay safe, and just load a few and see if it stabilizes. Worst case scenario, you find out that it doesn't work the way you hoped it would, and it costs you a few primers and a bit of powder.

Try it and see. Then you will know. Report back with your findings and we will all know a little more.

A 14 twist will stabilize a 3 caliber, 1.2 long spitzer at 1400 fps. I'm sure your 230 gr, 5 caliber is longer and you may not be able to stabilize it. But, a 12 twist may do it.

How long is that 230 gr bullet?

206 gr down sized 303 boolit does ok in my tc carbine, kicks right smart though

It casts a right gorgeous pill, although I have yet to shoot any. I can't get any unique at the moment, so perhaps someone else may have guidance on a good start load, preferably with a pistol powder? I have 2400, Red Dot, Bullseye, 4756, and a ton of other stuff. Not really comfortable working outside the ranges of normal bullets, which is why I was desperately checking gun store shelves for unique on the way home earlier! Always had good luck with light charges of that in rifle cartridges. I'm not looking for a hunting load here, just paper.

Weight as cast (straight COWW + a tiny bit of monotype for fillout) is 231.1 averaged between 30 boolits.

Length of boolit is 1.36".

It should just stabilize in a 12 twist at 1400 fps. 10 or 11 would be a sure thing.

I think 2400 would be a much better choice for that set up; Unique could get really hot really quick. If I were to try this in my rifle, My start would be 8 gr 2400 and would probably find happiness at about 10 grains.

I think powder load and choice depends on desired performance. If I was going for subsonic, I would start with 4.0grs Unique. But wouldn't be surprised if this didn't stabilize. If going for top performance, I think Dan's recommendation of 2400 is perfect for this. Fast enough to work, slow enough to keep pressures down.

Maybe try LeveRevoltuion powder. It's supposed to be just the ticket with heavy bullets in the 30-30 Win.
