This isn't really cast but I still would like to know. I have bought a new piece of property and I have noticed I am in the middle of some Canadian geese flight path.
I'm not a duck hunter but I have always wanted to try a goose. I have a Win Hester 1300 with all the chokes. The barrel is either 22" or 24" long. I was wondering what steel shot size would be best and which choke to knock one of these geese out of the air. I also know the right combo depends on distance and I find it hard to judge that when they are directly over head. I honestly think and believe they are rather close.
What is recommended?

With steel shot try BBs with Improved Cylinder choke.

Tony

2 3/4" or 3"? How do I know how tight I can go without damaging the barrel or chokes?

Go with the largest shot allowed. The BB recommendation above is a good one. Instead of steel I would try the Heavyshot loads. They are pricey, but how many do you need. From what I know of steel and heavyshot shoot a fairly open choke, probably no tighter than modified, and the IC was a good suggestion as well.
Good Luck,

Very very very common misconception about needing a full choke for steel, I regurally use a IC/mod choke !

Steel shot is oppisate from lead. The tighter the choke, the more it will spread. I used a open bore choke when i used steel. You will ruin a full or modified shooting steel

If legal in your place use # 4 buck shot you will be surprised at the results.I have been told it wasn't sportsman like to use it.The gooses(geese)sure make a good gumbo.

I'll check my laws on shot size. I'm really only aiming for 1 or 2 geese to try. What sort of distance or range can I get with BB and IC choke?

Looks like I'm able to use as big as T shot for geese.
How expensive is HevI Shot?

And it looks like it opens again November 28th

I didn't have a lot to choose from but I picked up a box of Remington Nitro steel BB 3" 1 1/4oz 1450 fps. Now just have to get the stamps and hope the birds stay in the same pattern.

The #4 buckshot recommendation is a good one................as long as they aren't made out of lead! I have taken geese with #2 Hevi-Shot. It smacks them hard.

Buckshot on geese out here is a no go.

I use BBB or BB steel and an IC or Mod choke
Your 1300 is a 2 3/4 inch chambered gun
Go with the 2 3/4 inch ammo
Have shot MANY geese with a BBB load, 50 yards or under as
most folks do not have the practiced skill to go farther

I prefure #1s and a modified choke in my 10 ga. The paterns are dense enough for head or neck shots. I have had a lot of sail outs and not recovered with big shot. I hope to get a few shots in the morning.

All 3 of my 1300s are 3" chambers. The older 1200s were 2 3/4"

I had really good luck with 1 1/8 oz of BB's moving 1600 fps using a cheddite 209 primed Cheddite 3" hull, LBC 43 wads cut into 4 petals, and 43.0 gr of Alliant Steel... This was on Large Snows and White Fronts..

Otherwise my standard load is 10 ga with Precision Brown wads (TUPRW105), 1 3/8 oz of BBB Steel, 44 gr of Alliant Steel in the 3.5" Remington Black plastic basewad hull and Fed 209a Primers.. This load chronos about 1525 fps out of my 28" Gold light 10.
