Here is my first post. Still learning my way around the board. I wind up reading for hours, and never get around to asking any questions.

I want to get a Lee gas check 6-cavity mold that makes smooth feeding hunting boolits for my Marlin chambered in 44 mag. My rifle does not have micro groove rifleing. I was thinking about a round nose flat point, and I am undecided on what weight it should be.

Has anyone made something like this before?

I have the Lee 2 cavity 200 grain round nose flat point mold. Boolits cast with it feed well if I keep the overall length long enough. I don't want to get crazy with velocity with the 200 grain plain base boolit, and lead the bore. I really want to hunt with boolits that I made, and want some that will work well on wild boar. And some that won't jam while an animal with big teeth is coming at me!

Wl,

Go to "Group Buys" and search for .... 434250. I think Bill has some extras.

I posted a desire for something like this a few days ago. I suggested a copy of the Lyman 429215, a 210 grain gas check bullet, in a .434 diameter for use in Marlins, most of which run oversize in bore diameter. We could always buy a 4 banger from Lyman but not .434 diameter....

Lee has an off the shelf , the C429-240-SWC, # 90483, these are available from such as MidwayUSA or Midsouth for about $35 for the mold and $13 for the handles, plus shipping.
I would get the 2 cavity,#90338, $18 with the handles, unless you are really shooting a lot.
I find the 1 and 2 cavities are easier to use and will make a bunch of bullets in a short time, easily 3-400 per hour.

I have the lee 2 cavity 310 grain round flat, 240 grain gas check swc, 200 grain round nose flat point mold, and the 214 and 240 grain semi-wadcutter hollow point, and the 208 wad cutter, All the semi-wadcutter bullets snag, and part if the wadcutter edge gets shaved off when chambering. The 310 round flat only hangs some of the time.

I got a 6-cavity 93 grain .311" diameter mold with the intentions of using it in my CZ52 pistol. It worked so well, I am hooked on the 6-cavity molds. Except for the fact bullets drop from it at .314" not .311" diameter. :-(

I next bought the Lee 6-cavity 429240 round nose mold. It makes great bullets, but I am afraid to stick the round nose bullets in the tube magazine. Dummy rounds feed slicker than greased owl $H1t.

Ho Whitelitenin,

I've got the bullet mold you are looking for. It's made by LEE Precision on a custom only basis. The mold name is Mav Dutchman. I shoot it in my Browning 92 44 Magnums and my Ruger Vaqueros. This bullet feeds flawlessly thru my 92s and others that have shot it in Marlins have had good luck with it.

It is a great smokeless powder design, but an even better Black Powder design because it is a true Big Lube(tm) design.

For more information, please email me at rrhody@spwl.net. I'll send you complete details.

P.S. I've added a drawing of the Mav Dutchman per request.

I know, "Round nose bullets will cause a chain fire in a tubular magazine", however, I have never heard of it actually happening, spire or spitzer fmjs, yes, but not cast rns.

D-D......

That's an interesting design, all right. Had there been some of those critters installed in my '73's black powder ammo I tried a few years ago, it likely would not have "fouled out" so quickly with a groove-full of SPG.

What is the spec weight of the castings? The diameter wasn't clear in the drawing--izzit .434"?

Thank you!

My mold drops 'em at about .432 and I lube/size to .429. 44-40 shooters prefer to size to .428 or .427 for early guns. Later on the 44s all pretty much standardized on .429

That's the size my Brownings and RVs like the .429 size, them bein' 44 Magnums and all.

There's lots of other bullets of this design also. One is the PRS 45-250 for 45 Colt and another is the j/p 45-200 for 45 Colt. One of the oldest designs and one that really works great is the Snakebite. It's designed with a long ogive and a flat metplat so that it can be loaded in 38 Spl. cases and shot out of 357 Magnum rifles. I use it in a pair of RVs and a Browning 92 357 Magnum when I'm in a "gamer" mood.

Love the True Powder.

Doug Wells, a local gunsmith had a Rossi 92 in 357 in a few years ago that had a detonation in the magazine and blew it out when 2 or 3 shells fired. The shooter could still count 10 fingers and 2 working eyes. His opinion was round noses set off a high primer or the pocket was loose enough to have the primer back out. Gianni.

I think Saeco has a 44 cal mould that throws a 265 gr rnfp that has worked well in my 44's.

Just curious, what diameter do those drop from the mold when cast of wheelweight?

I'm getting 0.4315" to 0.432" depending on alloy from mine.

Thanks for the info. Looks like they'll come out a bit small for my needs.
