I had my Marlin 30-30 rebored to 356 Win. I would like to shoot 204gr cast for plinking and 285gr cast for "bear" loads. I'm looking for data for the 285gr cast bullet using 4320, 4064 or another powder that I have on my shelf. Once I use up the 285gr bullets that were gifted to me I will be using 265gr cast bullet.

I can't be of much help with the cast boolits?, my quest with the 356 is with Speer 220's and Leverevolution, but I warn you not to waste your time calling Hodgdon!, that was a waste of 10 minuets of my life!, as far as they are concerned the 356 is obsolete and any and all date they have for it is available on line.

I have a JES 356 rebore on the Marlin, excellent shooter it is. Using the Lee reloading manual, simply check into the data for the bullet weight you want to use, start with a starting load for the powder choice you you made, and work up to your target pressure using chapter 9 on velocity vs. pressure.

you can also modify 358 data I dunno if there is anything in that heavy of a weight boolit listed.

I'd take a close look at 358 Win and 35 Rem data and back off 2-3 grains for a starting load. Heavies will get you into uncharted territory pretty fast, anything above 2100 fps would probably be wishful thinking and unnecessary. 4895, Varget and 4064 look like a good place to start with the heavies. 2400 looks good for the plinker load.
Start low, work up slowly.

Case Capacity for 356 and 358 are the same and performance is very similar - like fps slower in 356. Both are loaded to 52,000 CUP per SAAMI.
Use info for Lyman 35809 or 358009 reloaded in 358 winchester and make sure to start off on the low side and work up for your gun.

Depending on the age of the donor rifle, use minimum load data for .358 Win as a guide.
Put together a few dummy rounds to make sure those long bullets will cycle through the action before getting too carried away with the heavy weights.

The AA reloading manual says you can use 358W loading data.

The length isn't the problem. It is the large meplate and nearly full cal OD just aft of the meplate.
Noonaman (sp?) modified the internals to make a dummy feed. He also said that I could swap out the parts from the 336 with the 444 and 45-70 parts. This has fallen to my back burner as I have only shot lighter bullets from it. I'll get it figured out here this summer.

Where did you find 356 Winchester Brass?

My projects take years to complete. About 2002 I decided that someday I would have a 356 Win. Now I do, I just haven't fully tested it yet (w/285gr cast boolits). I have 150 pcs of 307 Win brass for that someday I will buy/build a 307.

Hornady's 444 brass is quite short (from their Flex Tip ammo) and can be had for cheap. One pass thru a 358 Win sizer and it is 356 brass.

cowboybart, I have no experience with the 285 grainers in 356, but some with the lighter 200 gr RCBS boolit. I have seen some data on heavier boolits somewhere and will see if I can find it. I like your idea on the 444 brass to convert, I'm gonna check that out!!
