I just picked up a Lyman 454190 with the new style handles at a swap meet last week for $25 and cast a few up to try. It casts a nice boolit that sizes to .452" easily, what I'm looking for is some suggestions on an easy shooting (lighter accurate load) for Ruger Blackhawk in 45 Colt. Lyman book shows the accuracy load at 9 grains of Unique with this boolit. I'm currently using a RCBS 255 @ 6 grains and enjoying the accuracy as well as the softer recoil, would the 6 grain load be a good starting point with this boolit as well? Is there another powder choice that might work better?

Thanks, Longone

I use 5.6 grains of Tite group under 230 grain plain base round nose loobed with 45/45/10,good plinking round and light recoil.Pretty accurate for me.

I would use a faster burner than Unique if downloading. Six grains of Red Dot with that bullet crimped over the ogive is a factory load duplicate. I would feel comfortable cutting that charge for lighter recoil, plus the powder bulks up well in the large case.

6 gr of Red Dot, N320 or Bullseye will be light comfortable and probably accurate loads in the 700 - 800 fps range. My preference with that bullet has always been 8.5 gr Unique but it is a stouter load but very accurate.

Nice buy! You paid for the handles and got the mould for free! If you were happy with your old load it would be a good starting place but I like one in the neighborhood of Larry's load. Only load I enjoy more is about 37 grs of FFFg KIK black powder.

Nice find, the 454190 is a great bullet. A light load of Unique will work and probably shoot fine but it might be dirty. Unique works well across a broad range but it does tend to leave residue at lower pressures. A faster burning powder might shoot cleaner if you run into excessive powder residue with Unique.

What size does the 454190 drop? I'm watching one on EBay and wanted a .454 boolit.

Thanks

I have 2, both older molds. 1 is an Ideal no vent lines with deep square lube grooves, the other is a Ideal Middlefield with round lube grooves. Both drop a tick over .454"

The Factory Winchester load was 7.1 gr of 231 with a 250 gr bullet. The factory load shot very well in both my 92 Puma and my 45 Colt Blackhawk with 7.5 long barrel.

I like 6.0 grains of reddot with this boolit, but I have also used 6.8 grains of WW-231. A friend of mine used to swear by SR 7625, and he shot better with his 45 than do I. I like 8.5 grains of Unique with the 454-424. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

I just picked up this mold and handles from a member here and waslooking for a load to start with. You have both of the guns I am casting for by coincidence so this is a lucky post find for me. Thanks
