Last year I bought a 24" octagon barrel Rossi in .45 Colt. Since then, I have installed a Lyman globe front sight (.404") and a Marbles tang sight.

My question is, all other factors being equal, and say, 8 gr. of Unique, which boolit will impact higher at 50 yards:

1. the Lyman 452460 at 200 gr. or,

2. the Lyman 454424 at 250 gr.?

Thanks, Tt.

All other factors are not equal.

The bullet weight will cause the rifle to react differently in ways that cannot be determined.

The only way to answer that question is to try it out.

If a betting man was on this, with velocity nearly the same at 8 grains of Unique, the 200 grain bullet should hit higher at 50 yards and out to 100 yards it should be more so. As been stated though, shooting will tell you for sure.

Ummm, usually a heavier boolit will shoot higher with an identical charge than a lighter boolit, at least out to 25 yards. Heavier boolit will be slower, will give more time for the muzzle to rise from recoil. This is more pronounced in handguns with their shorter barrels, but still an issue with lighter rifles and carbines.

However, I vote with Will on this one. You won't know until you try 'em both in your gun. There are more exceptions than there are rules when it comes to cast boolits and guns.

I shoot 200, 230, 250 and 300 gn boolits in my Rossi guns and like all of them. Each weight uses a different load. I do not use Unique at all as I feel it is dirty. I have 9 different powders to choose from depending on what I am doing with the bullets and who is shoot them.

But as said above, best way is to try 'em.

The key to good accuracy in a Rossi is to use a .454 boolit. I shot a boatload of .452s before I figured this out.
I shoot either a 250gr RNFP .454 or a 255gr SWC .454 with 10gr of Unique.
8gr of Unique is a very nice load and a good place to start.
And you won't see any difference in impact points at 50 yards - as you would expect from a revolver. The handgun rises with recoil and changes your point of impact - the recoil from a rifle is different and won't affect the trajectory as much as a handgun does.
Your Rossi is going to like the heavier/fatter boolit best.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I slugged the Rossi's bore on Saturday and it miked .452", so Snaketail is correct. Mine will probably like a .454 boolit. I have two Mihec and one old Lyman 454424 mould that all drop boolits at .454. The Mihecs are a H&G 68 and a 454423, so I have the spectrum covered between 200 and 250 gr. now, with another Mihec 270 gr. group buy mould in the pipeline. Tt.
