Went to the range today, to tryout(test) my new to me Ruger Redhawk 5 1/2. Serial puts it at 1986 mfg, original owner purchased it, fired 25 rds of hot hornady ammo, was put off by the recoil(he had only fired a 38 spl before), put it away in a drawer for 25 yrs until he sold it to me. I have been looking for one like this for ever. Well, after 200 rds of 6 different loads I'm still pleased. I took my Super Blackhawk along for comparison and I'm glad I did . The Red hawk really tames the 44 mag cartridge. It shot everything more comfortably, and some more accurately. I have already found a mid range load that drives tacks. Believe it or not it eats 10.5 grs of Unique under a Lachmiller 255 gr GC SWC like candy all day. This Lachmiller is very similar to Lyman 429244, and pushed to an average 1138 fps its making nice smiley faces in the 10 ring.

I better pinch myself, this kind of luck doesn't usually happen to me. ;)

What kind of load data is available for it. That should be a Ram busting SOB.

I always liked the "standard" over the super RHs. Just feels right in the hand.

I love my two Redhawks. One is a .41 mag 5.5" and the other a .44 mag 7.5 ring model. Both are very accurate. I have some old Millet white outline rear sights and use a Hi Viz green front sight. I can see them in very low light in the woods.

I like my 7 1/2 incher. Like Clay, I have a white outline rear and a Hi Viz front sight, though mine is red. It gives me another 20 minutes hunting on the Eastern slopes before it gets to dark to see the sights.

Ooh I love the redhawk over the srh. I found my SBH like that, many years old, looked new, probably only had a cylinder shot through it and traded. Even heavy hand loads with cast are SO much more pleasant and fun than jacketed, those are not fun at all.

Great find and here's to many good years.

That is my favorite kind of used handgun to find! Well done!

I'm liking my RH too, a 7.5, 45 Colt with a scope. I've had mine less than a year and have been using up some Cast Performance boolits that came with the purchase. 300 LFN and 265 WFN with 2400 are doing good as well as RCBS 255.

If you like how it tames a full house 44 now, you should try one with a Hogue Mono Grip on it. Finger grooves and hard rubber soak up the recoil and it won't move in your hand. First thing I do to any hunting handgun I own.

That is a beautiful revolver. I am a Ruger fan myself.
