Well Here I go again. Got me a 98 Mauser action and now I have to build another gun. I am planing on making a 30-06 just for cast. No "J" words going down this barrel. Below are some pics of the action as I got it. I will post more pics to this thread as I get things done to it. This will be my third centerfire project. First was an 8MM. Second was a 45-70 and now this one. This is as addicting as melting the silver stream!:groner:

My first 35 Whelen was built on a 98 action. It had a midway barrel, a Bold trigger, and was set in a composite stock. The rifle shot wonderfully, but being left handed, I traded it for a savage left hand 06 which now has a whelen barrel. Love the Whelen. Have fun with your project.

Take lots of pictures and keep us posted on your progress - Got to love a custom gun that's made just the way you want it.

Receiver chucked in the lathe to square up the face. Had to use my Gunsmiths lathe because I broke the mandrel at my shop[smilie=b: and had to borrow his so I used his lathe to finish the job. Nice to have friends like that.:-P

Well I got a barrel. Savage 110 old model. New old stock. Never fired in 30-06. This one will be nothing but a cast shooter. Just so happens that the threads are just a little bit fatter than the small thread Mauser (large ring small thread ) that I have and they are the same threads per inch. All I had to do was run a 55 degree threading tool thru it a few times and cut it back so that the inside shoulder and the outside shoulder hit at the same time. Pictures below.

Barrel after rethreading and ready to start fitting.

Barrel fitted to the action. (hand tight. not ready to put it in the vise yet.)

Stay tuned for more updates.;)

Looking good !

Ive never done the hot water rust blue . What do you use for the job ? I caustic blued before all the home brew salts materials were taken off the shelf .

I use Art's Belgium Blue. It's not a hot salts black. It is actually a deep blue. Looks more like what you see on the the slow rust blue on the old English doubles.

No. Get it at Midway. Art's Belgium Blue. I have used the Dicropan IM but it is harder to do than Art's.

Shot better than I expected with this load. Just used a Lee dipper and loaded to the crimp groove.

I'd say you could eliminate most any pest with that load. :2_high5:
