Hello Folks,
I’m planning a stubbed-barrel cartridge conversion on an H&R Ultra Hunter. At this time I’m undecided on the cartridge. My purpose in this conversion is twofold: I want a barrel to shoot 35, 366, or 375 caliber jacketed bullets at 2400 fps, and cast bullets at 1800 fps. Although the H&R extractor will grasp a rimless cartridge, I prefer rimmed.
One possibility is the family of cartridges based on the 444 Marlin case, and this may be where I end up. The necks tend to run a little short for my tastes, as I prefer a cast bullet with ample lube grooves. I’ll probably end up using a gas check bullet design, and I like to keep the check in the case neck.
Another possibility would be a cartridge based on the 9.3x74R case, including the parent cartridge. The builder may balk at this suggestion, objecting that this is too much power for the H&R. As an experienced handloader I will tailor the loads to the gun, but the gunsmith doesn’t know me.
Yet another cartridge I’m considering is the 356 Winchester. The reduced case capacity and short neck don’t appeal to me, but I’ve always thought this was probably a good cartridge for shooting jacketed bullets.
At this time I’d like to start a discussion on cartridges. What are your suggestions?
Thanks, Tom
