Does anyone have a pre 1983 Mirro 8 qt pressure cooker in good working order? I know that pre 1983 use a different gasket than those manufactured after 1983. The lid on mine does not seem to be fitting quite correctly. One of the lugs on the pot near the handle has what appears to be a built in stop, so that the lid can only turn so far in one direction (to lock). I can find no mention of this lug anywhere, and am thinking maybe mine is a little beat-up. If you look at the lugs, all appear the same except for one, which has a 3/8" down turn at one end. If you have one that is working fine, perhaps you could take a picture of your lug so I could compare it with mine. Thanks for any help.

Do the handles line up?

When it was working, the handles would be offset until closed. There was a positive stop when they were in the correct postion, now it will just keep turning. I think the problem is that bent down portion of the lug has been worn down, but have no way of determining if this is indeed the problem. Need a good one to compare it to.

I would line up the handles and see if it builds up pressure

You may be in luck, I have a couple of old pressure cookers/canners in our storage building. I can't guarantee that they'll be what you're looking for, but I know for sure one is a mirro and one is an 8qt, just need to hope that they're one in the same.

I'll check tomorrow and see what they are.

Just spent about an hour looking for them and the wife asked me what I was looking for. Apparently they were sold in a garage sale at some point and I wasn't aware.

Sorry I couldn't help out

Go to fleabay and look at pics, you might find a pic that answers your question. Also, you can google for your mirro pressure cooker and choose images up at the top of the page and you should get hundreds of images of mirro pressure cookers, that might help too.

Whatever you do, don't order a new pressure cooker and two pounds of FFg black powder at the same time.

John, thanks for taking the time. I do appreciate it.
Doug, I have been, but so far no luck finding a picture illustrating just what I am looking for.
Dale, I make my own black, so I don't need to order that. :p

I was wondering myself what would happen if you started shopping the web for pressure cookers....how long before the FBI show up to see just what you want one for. Thank God they didn't have clip on whell weights in that bomb....

Did you try the Mirro Aluminum Company? They are still in business. We have a Presto brand cooker, pre 1970, and are still able to get parts for it from the Presto Company.
