COW does the same think for a fraction of the price. It isn't consumed on ignition but who cares.
The 38-55 and 40-65 are low enough in recoil that I don't think you would gain much there.

I have used flour between the opw and a hollow base bullet with mixed results but I never got great groups with a hollow base anyhow. LB

I screwed up on asking about some filler on BP loads. when I meant about using the filler from Blackdog in some smokeless loads? as a space filler on some lite loads with 2400? unique? what ever?

I use both COW and dried, used coffee grounds. The coffee grounds smell better, as has been stated by others.

Oh, if you're using faster powders like 2400 and faster, DON"T USE COW OR COFFEE GROUNDS! Sorry, I just noticed that the original question didn't mention that.
I guess you could use Dacron with 2400, but I don't think I'd use it with Unique.

Hmmm, sorry for add'l posts, but why are you asking about smokeless fillers in a BP site? I'm confused...

Shotgun buffer works for me in .44-40 cartridges.

Discombobulated thread- I'll say!
Basic Rules for taking up space: (there are huge internal ballistic differences between smokeless and BP, so an understanding of the differences is a must)
For low load density smokeless-- use low mass, fluffy dacron or equivalent to take up the space between bullet and powder.
For light charges of black powder-- use dense- semi non-compressible media or wad material to take up the space between the BP charge and the bullet. Using a low density material like fluffy dacron in a BP load to take up space is like seating a bullet above a BP charge and leaving an air space- generally a big no-no.
