Hello folks.

I just got a beautiful NOE 4 cavity 225407 mold and I loaded some .223 with 12gr of IMR4895. I loaded 10 rounds at COAL of 2.165, 2.212, 2.262. I plan on shooting them sometime this weekend if I am lucky.

I do, however, have many other powders such as: Unique, bullseye, green dot, wst1, blue dot, solo 1000, scot 453, h4895, AA2495, IMR4227, AA2460, AA1680, SR4759, 700-x.

This is my first .223 bullet and I lent out my Lyman book and it never came back. Any suggestions of starting loads for this bullet?

Much Appreciated.

For S&G, load three rounds with 3.5g 700X and see where/how they print at 35-70 feet. Objective is pellet gun report, minute of Starling, etc. Caution: set scope to shoot very high for these "Quiet" loads. Trajectory will suck big time, so don't even contemplate longer ranges without a scope adjustment sheet taped to the stock. Pistol primers with tuft of toilet paper to hold powder next to primer so shooting angle can vary big time. ... felix

Well, i tried 4064 with mine today.... It pretty much sucked.... They were all over the place..... I tried up to 24 grains... No groups whatsoever...

Ok, tried some in my Savage BTCSS. 1:9 twist. This rifle was pillar and glass bedded, free floated and has a precision ground heavy recoil lug installed. Fired from Bipod on bench. Millett LRS-1 6-25x56 35mm scope. (Just so you know the platform)

Now the .223 cases are fire formed to this rifle, outside neck turned, neck sized, primer pockets trued and chamfered, flash hole trued and chamfered in and out, case mouth chamfered in and out, then wet polished. Cases have been pre sorted IMI case stamp and weigh within 1.0gr of each other.

Boolits after sizing and GC'ing weighed in at 64.8gr. Each loaded round weighed within 0.8gr of each other.

I made up some with 12.0 gr of something (I have to check my records, but I think 4895). Velocities were 2300/2400/2312/2345/2200 ft/sec but at 50 yards showed some promise, couple inch group with the occasional flyer. The inconsistencies in velocity I can only attribute to the low case volume. I may have to revisit this loading but reduce to 10gr and use some filler fuzz.

THEN

I tried 24gr of AA-2460, GC'ed and seated to 2.061 COAL, very light crimp (not even sure I'd call it a crimp, just pushed the slight bell I made in the case mouth for easy seating back into place nicely).
Velocities were:
3017
3016
2915
3030
2968
2936
3045
All over the place at 100 yards (by feet), no discernable group in any way. And no leading that I could see.

I'm thinking this is not a "go-fast" bullet. I think brought down to 1900-2000 ft/sec seated at 2.06 (or a tad more) might do the trick.

I'd be very interested to hear what you all think.

Better check your loads or your chronograph as 12 gr of 4895 (any flavor) should not have produced 2200 - 2400 fps. 3000 fps is also probably high for 24 gr of AA2460 with a 62 gr bullet.

I suggest you start at 15 gr 4895, use a 1/3 - 1/2 gr Dacron filler and work up to 22 gr.

I really liked unique for my cast using the 62 gr "fiver" mold... I laddered up from 6 gr to 9 gr with 8 really starting to look nice... I GC'd mine and i am very pleased.... I will be testing another powder soon as the weather breaks here.. Been blowing 65 here..

IMR 4895 with 62 grain boolits starts getting shotgun groups at 22.5 grains. My best groups (about .75 inch @ 100yds) are with 19.5 grains + dacron filler, they chrono at 1950 fps. I am shooting a mid length, 16 inch, 1:9 twist chrome lined barrel.

I don't think those velocities on the 4895 are outrageous if the case volume is less than half and you're lighting the whole case off at once. I think the Dacron filler is the ticket

If you say so...........

200 fps variation absolutely tells you, you need a filler.
it tells me you might be in for a ddt or see event too if you go any lower.

if you start over and don't turn the necks you might have a bit better accuracy.
i'd seriously consider the filler with the 4895,using more or switching to a faster powder.
you have to walk a fine line with the 22 calibers between alloy hardness/malleability holding the round in the centerline of the bore, stability, velocity, and feeding properly.

Larry, any chance of explaining instead of the smart remark? Just wondering. Cause I have two chronographs and this isn't my first day at the reloading bench.
