Just bought an older 336 chambered in .38-55 with a Green Mountain 1:12 twist octagon barrel and MVA "traditional" scope. Where is the serial # located on these rifles (this is my first lever gun)?

The owner has several .38-55's and said he really likes the RCBS Cowboy Action dies. Next step for me is to get dies and a mould, maybe in the 350-grain range.

Thanks!

Tom

S/N should be on either the top tang or the bottom tang. I've got them both ways. If it has a tang sight it may be covering the S/N.

You may try looking under the lever on the tang.

.

AFAIK, various Marlin CF leverguns had the SN stamped in one of 3 places: The top tang, the bottom tang, & the top edge of the LH receiver sidewall - beside also inside the buttstock's wrist inletting (in the wood).

Found it. Took the butt stock off and it is stamped in the sidewall of the upper piece. 836XX.
