85035 chock one up for the old Rossi , the little 357 did what needed to be done , unfortunately with 158 Sierra J-words , cast would have given me better performance , something like acww would have penetrated better but the j-warts got the job done

Hey thats my gun !
Dont know much about Muelies and White tails but to me that one looks healty, Thick neck and Some fat around the mid section.
What was your load and the distance ?
Heading for Oregon in a week to look for Elk with my brother and picking up a new Tikka Hunter in 308 with a Leaupold scope to bring back.

Yes he was healthy , dragging and hanging him made me aware of that lol. My load is 16.5 gr of H110 behind a Sierra 158 gr in a Winchester case sparked by a win SP mag primer . This gives me 1850 fps over the chronograph . Range was about 25 yards , entrance wound is right in front of the muzzle of the rifle in the pic

that is a big bodied deer, it soaking up a 158 without penetration isn't too surprising.
a 257 Roberts might not have made 2 holes.

Good job!! I'd say that little carbine kills on both ends. I hope to take my Marlin 1894 out when our rifle season comes in a couple of weeks.

Great Job! I'm trying to talk my dad into getting one in 44 mag. Unfortunately for now he is stuck on a Timberwolf Pump Gun. I agree with him in that its a cool gun, but the rossi has a strong reputation for reliability and it is also more in his price range.

Lots of jerky there. Nice shot if you shot him in the base of the neck on purpose. Just checking: Are the bucks in rut up there yet?

About a week till they start to rut , the neck shot was the only shot he was giving me ,

Nice stocky buck. Neck looks a bit swollen so He's look'in for a little love at the very least. I'm in the State that Fort Francis is bordered to. 9th is the start of season down here. Had a camera out last week dnepr. Seen one like yours and a small spike waking around in the dark. Not going to be easy to either in range before dark. But there are ways. Now you got time to go look for your moose too. Anyway congrads Sir.

Sweet and a nice shot. I am definately working up a load for my 45colt Rossi. Thinking 265gr swc over 18 -20gr 2400.

Maybe I missed it, but what did he weigh in at?

I didn't weigh him but from dragging and hanging him I am thinking he was sneaking up on the 200 lbs mark I added a pic of him hanging in the shop if that gives you an idea of his rough size ,

Nice "corn cruncher" from any view. Nothing like dragging them about to get your attention.
I would think at that impact velocity that sierra would have turned near inside out. 1800 FPS for a caliber .358 handgun bullet is slamming it in there.
Have a friend in Indiana who used caliber .357 mag revolver with 158 grainers till he lost several in a row due to no exit holes. He switched to 180 grainers and never lost another.

Mike in Peru near inside out is a good description , I recovered the bullet while cutting up the deer . It did make it through the spine into the meat on the other side . As the picture shows it lost the jacket and flattened right out , retained weight is 108 gr , a cast boollit of something like acww , that is a little heavier too would have given better performance , but I have meat in the freezer so I can't complain too much:-P

Nice deer! I had a Lee 158 SWC mold that dropped wheel weights at 166 grains. That would be about perfect for that guy's twin.

After seeing that slug I think it's good you didn't go for a body shot. Don't think it would have penetrated too well. Right now Im mostly shooting the Lee 358-158-RF with added gas check out of my 1894. Cast out of roughly 50/50 WW and range lead they are cheap, accurate, and no leading so far.
