At my Cowboy Action club we were shooting a 'Wild Bunch' shoot where we can shoot pre 1912 bolt action rifles with lead bullets @ about 50 yds and a friend gave me some loads for my 91 Arg that shot right to the point of aim so I ordered some of the same 180 grn .312 lead bullets from Moyer's Cast Bullets. The guy that loaded them for him said that he used 24 grn of IMR 4198 in them. I can't seem to find any of this powder anywhere but I have some cans of IMR 4895 & 4064 that I bought a good while ago when I was loading my 308 and M1. I was wondering if anyone has used these in this caliber and with less bullets?

Thanks
Mike

31.3 GRS OF imr 4895 should get you into the same ballpark. This is according to my Quickload program. In fact, it came out with the same velocity on the nose.

Thanks, what is Quickload and what velocity did you come up with?
Thanks

............The 7.65 Argentine like the other old full power military cartridges are very shootable with several of the pistol/shotgun powders. These are also quite economical and for 50 yard shooting you don't need much horsepower to ring a steel plate or put a hole in paper. Some of these would be 8.0 Red Dot or 700X, 10.0 Unique or SR7625, 16.0 2400, 20.0 4227 or 4759.

Get a copy of one of the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbooks, either edition 3 or 4. The Argentine is listed in both, and has loads for 3 different boolits. I've owned a Mod '09 for a long time, but am just getting ready to try and put cast through it. Personally, I'm fascinated by the idea of paper patching. Still trying to make it work. Have fun!!!

I shoot 20 grains of 5744 in my Argie, 1/2 groups at 100 yards all day long.
Boolit is the 314299 from NOE

I have two 91 Argies that like Red or Green Dot (12gr) and 2400 (16gr.)

I found the best loads for my Argies using 200 grain gas checked boolits sized to .314 over 32.0 grains of IMR-4895 gave me the best deer killing rounds.

That's with 185 grain boolits sized .314.

If your Cowboy Action club adheres to SASS rules your rifle ammo can not exceed 1400 fps. However, the rule is relaxed for "side matches" and many times in Wild Bunch Matches. Any idea of the particular rules regarding rifle ammo max velocity for your club?

If you have pistol powerds use 12.5 of Red Dot. WW 748 also works well in the Argentine.

Larry,

The club that I belong to adheres to SASS rules for most things but we invented 'Wild Bunch' matches back in the mid 90's and our rules have always been different than SASSs. SASS has just recently picked up on the idea of 'Wild Bunch' shooting and thy don't allow high powered rifle shooting as we do. We allow pre 1912 bolt action rifles with no velocity limit as long as they are shooting original calibers and shooting all lead bullets. We also invented Cody-Dixon Category witch is large bore BP rifles such as 45/70 etc. shooting at the same longer range targets as the Argentine (about 60 yds)

I am well versed in SASS Wild Bunch shooting also. That's good about your club flexing the rules to allow more shooting and to cater to local shooters also. Sounds like a fun match. I'd strongly 4895 and a Dacron filler in your Argie. Start at 28 gr and work up for accuracy to 32 gr. While looking for 4198 don't pass on a AA5744 as 24 gr under that bullet (no filler) should be accurate.

At the Winter Range SASS Nationals "full power" cast bullet loads are used in Long range events. Take a look at:

http://winterrange.com/long%20range.html

Be sure and check out the rifle requirements.

Last year I won the Bucky O'Neil Military Bolt Action Rifle Category with an 1896 30-40 Krag using a 220 grain 311284 bullet at 1950 fps and I won the Single Shot military rifle with 500 gr 457125 bullet with a 65 grain load of FFFG. An 1891 Mauser would be legal to shoot in the Military Bolt Action Rifle Category as is the 1903 Springfield etc.

Have Fun,
