I've been casting for years, but have only ever used a caliper. I'd like to start using a micrometer to get better readings on how my barrels slug.

Would this unit work ok for cast bullets?

I also have a few 5 groove guns, some S&W revolvers and a few 5R barreled rifles. I've heard that a 108 degree micrometer is perfect for measuring these bullets. Does anyone know who makes a decent, moderately priced 108 degree micrometer?

Thanks ahead of time!

James

As you must know, michrometers are quite expensive.
A 108* V-block as described by Col Harrison of NRA/American Rifleman fame described, is the more
economical tool.
Contact Ken (45Nut) to find one.
If you need to discuss the tool and it's use you can P.M. me.

Better than that, it would "work good." You can get used ones on Ebay for a good price. I got a nice Mitutoyo for $15.00.

Also, that 6" Fowler caliper for $15 is night and day better than any other caliper you'll find in that price range, or even double that.

Mic's don't have to be expensive. I, too, have seen some great deals on used ones on Fleabay. Good quality mic's, too...

James, that micrometer will work way better than even the most expensive calipers available. Get one and you don't need to look back.

From advice I got here, I picked up a like new Starret for $40. The retail on it was almost $200!

They're in and out of pawn shops all the time. I've bought several that way. Best deal I ever got was on a set from 0-1 to 5-6 starret for $100 in the wood box. The guy that worked there said "they look like fancy C clamps". The same visit I also bought "a fancy set of smooth sided legos".....it was a full set of AAA gauge blocks for $40. They didn't have much idea what they were but I'm sure they didn't loose money on them. It was a good day.
