After many frustrating attempts finally my 45/70 shoots. Numerous experiments including different lubes, alloys, powders yielded nothing but six inch groups. Then I decided to try a load with filler. HUGE difference. Six rounds of the Lee 340 gn over 35 gns of H322 gave me one nice round hole and a big smile. 40 gns of Varget the same. I would not have believed a tiny piece of polyester would make such a difference. Got no idea why but I don't care. Going to try 4198 next. Could anyone have a rough guess at the velocity with 322?

Would never have tried this without reading the sticky by Larry Gibson. Thanks to him and anyone who posted about fillers.

Cheers, Chizz

I rarely use filler but there have been times that fillers changed frustration into a fruitfull load . Congrats to you finding a good load .

CHIZZ i know how you feel. Went thru the same kind of thing with reduced loads in my whelen. Mr. Gibson's posts convinced me too. I was scared to try it in a bottle necked case , but followed his instructions.... instant success!!
Now if i don't have at least 85% case fill, the filler goes in. Glad it's working for you!!!

I'm glad you got your loads to work. Mr. Gibson is a great guy to have on the forum. He has forgot about reloading and casting than I will ever know.

Thank you men. Very satisfying to make your own boolit shoot straight.

405gr boolit, 28gr of 4198 and a 3/4gr tuft of dacron shoots a ragged hole at 50 yards with open sights for me with my 45-70. Velaocity is 1340 FPS with no more than 12 FPS difference in all the rounds I shot.
