View Full Version : Who else misplaces shell holders?

I was setting up to load some test rounds with a bullet from a new mold and the shell holder I needed was not in the box where I keep them. Check the die box, nope. Check the other die box that uses this shell holder, nope not there either. It is a case made from 8x50r Lebel; so there was not anything else I could make work because of the big rim. I guess it is good we have a sponsor that is quick and affordable in Titan Reloading. Anybody else misplace and order a new one, and then end up with a large collection of shell holders when the lost are found?

As much as I shoot my .416 Taylor that uses a .458 Win. Mag. shell holder you would assume I would know where the shell holder was. Well to make a long story short I just couldn`t remember where I put the holder the last time I used the die set. You can suggest I suffer from C.R.S. or "Old Fellers Syndrome" or whatever else I may have. Anyway I did a bench cleaning this Spring and came up with 3 shell holders for the Taylor! I have put a holder in the die box and an extra in with the pile of other holders. I sold the 3rd holder to another person that kept losing his holder for his .458, so we both won in the end.Robert

Got this about 20 years ago at a yard sale. Think I paid a dime for it. The bottom drawer has my shell holders. Other drawers have nose punches and other tiny spare parts.

The plastic is so old and brittle it has to be carefully opened. I usually find missing shell holders on my press.

I used to misplace them all the time. Now I keep the shell holder in the die box it belongs with. Every time I order a new set of dies, a new shell holder comes with it, so every box has a shell holder in it regardless if it is a duplicate (like my 30-30 and 38-55).

Tossed all of mine in the tumbler about a year ago for polish and managed to lose the one for .44 Magnum! I think it went to the same location as socks in the dryer.:groner:::

+1 for multiple caliber holders. Single caliber goes in the die box.

+1 on hanging them at eye level except I use cup hooks , if it's not hanging it's on one of four presses...... Now where did I put that press

I just noticed that Cabellas has Lyman reloading dies on sale with a shell holder included in every box.

I hope that is a new trend.

Hi...

I keep my shell holders in the box the die set came in.

I also buy shell holders and die sets when i see them at yard sales and such (if the price is right)...couple of bucks here and there makes for a full container of extra die parts.
I always buy a shell holder when I buy a die set.

I learned about extra die parts and shell holders the hard way. A few years ago, I stuck a live primer in a .41Mag shell holder in my APS priming tool and needed another shell holder to continue reloading.

After dropping the shell holder and stuck case in a container of oil, I went to the local gun shop (5 minute drive) to buy another shell holder. My little 5-minute drive turned into about a 4 hour tour of the area gun shops looking for a shell holder for a .41Mag. By the time I had found one, I had wasted a day at the reloading bench, spent more money than I needed to on primers, powders, bullets and cases, a new set of RCBS .38spl dies and put a down payment on a Cimarron Mason-Richards .38Spl conversion revolver.

Most expensive shell holder ever.

My advice...keep spares handy, its cheaper that way.

not since I got a Forster Co-Ax press. But I do keep all of my shell holders in the same drawer, in an old zipper "bank bag". Spares are kept in a box with the appropriate die set. That said, I have ordered stuff that I can't find, and observe the "30 minute rule".

I like that organized and labeled setup in clear boxes. Mine are in some wood boxes I made(my other serious hobby/addiction), but they are not see through or labeled.

RCBS and maybe a few others have a rack that is numbered and hangs on my shelf. Before that, I kept them in a drawer in a plastic parts cabinet. The ones that will only work on one cartridge live it that die box. Yeah, I've bought shellholders that I already have, too! Lightman

I guess it depends on your definition of "Lost". Does scouring the garage for 30 minutes before you find it count? I keep them in the die boxxes as much as possible.

I only seem to lose mine when I'm in a hurry. One strategy that seems to work well for me is to have dedicated presses that remain set up for specific calibers that are loaded frequently... not a strategy for everyone, but it works for me. [smilie=l:

My little green box of shell holders from Lee always seems to have one empty hole... for the shell holder I am looking for!

Shell holders in each box with dies even if duplicate calibers.. Then I have a box for extras that seem to get collected up in trades and such ..

I have the lee set as backup and of course store the extra w/ the dies it came with.

You should glue or screw a heavy duty magnet near your press or get one of those magnetic mechanic trays as a ketch all near your loading area

In a rare fit of organization one of the things I did was hammer a bunch of nails on one of the boards that supports my shelfs to hang the shell holders from, and I wrote what round(s) the caseholder is used for.

Shell holders and nose punches. They like to fall where you can't find them with a flashlight. I need some containers like 44Vaquero.

ColColt, they are $2.79 @ Harbor Freight right now reg $3.49. They also sell a larger one for $3.79! Perfect fit for nose punches and sizing dies!

The half dozen that I use often are stuck to a couple of bar magnets that are in turn stuck the press frame.

Those that are rarely used stay on the die box.

All the storage systems in the world are no help if I forget to put one where it goes. I am not always using them with their specific die sets since I might be using a Lyman M die, one of my converted to universal fit Lee collet dies, etc. I like that magnetic setup uscra112.

Did you check the reloading press? I usually find mine still in the holder slot on the press and I could swear I put it back in the shellholder box.

ColColt
10-18-2013, 07:27 PM
Funny you should mention that. It did happen once or twice. Same thing happened with my neck size die. It wasn't in the usual box, wasn't on the floor or bench top-couldn't figure where I could have possible put it. It was sitting right on top of the RCBS Jr.

I keep a shell holders in the box with the die set they go with--one shell holder for each set of dies. Also, anytime I see a shell holder for sale at a good price(one that I load for anyway) I buy it, package it in a little plastic baggie and mark it and store in in a box that I have for spare reloading die parts(lock rings, decapping pins, seating stems, etc.). I am getting old enough now that I forget why I went to the basement, reloading room, etc., so even my system is not foolproof. Somebody sure lied about the golden years. james

I keep mine in the shop vac! No big deal to tear open the filter bag to retrieve a lost shell holder or three. It's usually time to change the filter bag anyway.

I tell me wife, when she accuses me of losing things that it's not lost, its just elsewhere. One reason I like my things painted bright orange or red. Did you ever wonder why you find things at the last place you look? That's because after you find it you stop looking for it.

Ugh! It's the 0.473" rim dies that make me crazy. I just keep ordering more. I use multiple presses when preparing cases for reloading and use two or three SH at a time per session. ACPs, 308s, 30-06s...you get the idea...seem to hide in the last die box I have left to check.

And many of the SHs I have don't have the mfg's brand on them. Makes cross-referencing a matter of trial and error fitting.

At least Lyman uses an "X".
