I went hunting this evening to try and remove a pig or pigs from my deer hunting area. I've been noticing tracks near the feeder. Just a little after sunset three pigs about 100 or 120 lbs. showed up. When they stopped I put the crosshairs on the head of the middle pig and pressed the trigger. There was a loud whop and the pig fell. The other two trotted off about 10 yards. I was able to bolt another round and fire at a second pig just as it started to move off. I heard the whop of the hit. The second pig then crossed the fence into a thicket. I'm certain the hit was in the vitals even though I was not able to recover the second pig.

I recovered the boolit from the first pig. The pig had been standing straight toward me. However the trajectory was downward due to me being in an elevated stand. The Impact was behind the right ear and downward through the right side of.the neck and vertebra and ended up in the brisket area in front of the right leg/shoulder. I haven't weighed it yet but here are a couple of pics. I'm guessing that the boolit penetrated a good 10" of meat and bone. http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/ee467/BLK7mm/2013-10-12213456.jpg http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/ee467/BLK7mm/2013-10-12213446.jpg
Anyone want to guess which boolit this is? Alloy is 50/50 with a little tin and impact velocity was right at 1000fps. The boolit also has a deep hollowpoint.
Anyway, I brought the pig home for testing a couple of additional loads for this 300 whisper. Ive been shooting some 110 vmax, 311-410 HP, 312-159 HP, and 247 GC-HP. My 6 year old daughter had expressed an interest in deer hunting this year and I wanted.to check some load.performance.

Well, the 110 vmax is a no go. Results of shooting into my dirt berm was also confirmed with the pig. It is too explosive even at 300 whisper velocities. The 312-159 hollowpoint hasn't been chronographed yet but should be 1700 +. Load data has velocity at 1700 from a 10" barrel and my barrel is 16". The results in my dirt berm are that the boolit sheds the hollowpoint and retains about 70-90 grains of mass. I fired two rounds into the pig, one behind the shoulder and one through the shoulders. Both exited without any excessive or explosive damage. Looks like this will be my daughters deer load this year.

In case your wondering, the recovered boolit was a 311-410 with gas check and deep hollow point. Here is a pick of subsonic recovered boolits from my soft dirt berm. http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/ee467/BLK7mm/2013-10-07164045.jpg Impressive expansion to the bottom of the hollowpoint without loosing much mass. I'm really liking these at subsonic velocities. These will be my small critter getters (and pigs too).

Dang! Who says cast won't mushroom and kill clean! Plan to hunt cast with my Marlins in 30-30, 35 Rem and especially the new (to me) 45-70!

Nice work! Care to share the load you're using? What are you firing these out of?

I don't mind at all. The load is Trailboss at 4.7 grains. (My load, my gun. Consult a load manual and work up your load in your firearm). The boolit is an MP 311-410 gas checked, deep hollowpointed, and tumble lubed in 45-45-10.

I'm shooting a rebarreled Rem 700 that started life as a 223. It is now a 300 whisper with a 16" Shilen barrel in a Manners stock. Suppressor is a TBAC 30P-1. These loads are very quiet. Recently started using trailboss due to American Select being a little position sensitive.

Very impessive, I'm getting a 308 in a few weeks and starting to learn how to load for it and your post gave me some good info

I have found that with my 50/50 alloy, the lighter boolits and bullets are quieter due to being able to use a faster powder. I had to use aa1680 with the 247s to avoid some slumping. I believe that the faster powders with lighter boolits have less gas volume and also less muzzle pressure upon exiting the bore. I really need to do some additional load development with the 247s and 247 HPs, though.

Great write up. Im currently working toward a middle weight load for my 300 blk.

I went back today and found that second pig. He made it about 125 yards from where he was shot.
