Getting a Tikka 308, 22" barrel with a 11-1 twist, Mostly for target shooting and my brother has a 30-06 and i need to know what you all think of this Boolit for it's intended task.

Thanks, Steve

I have at least a dozen .30-caliber moulds.

One is an old Ideal 311413 4-cavity version that a previous owner had RADICALLY beveled..... all the cavity edges are now "angles", and the top edges of the blocks were so badly beveled that each bullet would cast with a couple little "horns" on the base, large enough to prevent the seating of a gascheck.

Buckshot dressed-down the top of the blocks to eliminate this effect, and the bullets are now much better, although with a VERY HEAVY parting line due to the beveling.

The 311413 design is very old.... back to the '30s or even older, I think.

It has shown some promise in my M1A and a couple other .308/.30'06 rifles, but other bullet designs seemed to do better so it didn't get a lot of attention.

If you can find a load that works, it will certainly do for target use. Don't be afraid to try slow-burning powders in those .30 rifles.... 4831, 4350, and similar powders may be just the ticket. Info on such loads appears on this website.

The LONG gascheck shank will act as an additional lube groove, as the lubricant will be applied ahead of the gascheck. This is perfectly alright,

The 311413 is indeed an older design that works very well with 30 cal rifles and has been successfully used for many decades. But many shooters have also found out that it works best when velocities are kept in the mid-ranges like 1500-1700 fps. Attempts to drive it significantly higher result in deteriorating accuracy/grouping. A write-up on this was done by Col. Harrison in his original investigation on 30 cal cast bullets in the old NRA Handloading Book. LLS

That is the Squibb bullet, named after someone with that name. It is supposed to shoot well at lower velocities and many complained it didn't do well at higher velocities. It is a bore rider so I always wondered about fit when those who complained stepped on the gas. If the nose didn't fit, it must slump to the side if pushed hard. So, Steve, a lot will depend on how your mold fits your rifle.

Wait till you get your rifle then check its dimensions by slugging, then get a mold to match, preferably a group buy or custom if it is a bore rider. Bore riders that don't fit at the nose can shoot fine at slow to medium velocities, but when you push them, they better fit, or they will fly wild.

No complaints from me on the 311413.

16 grs. 2400 in the 30 / 06 , 5 shots , 50 yards.

As long as you realize it has a " velocity threshold " ( and you stay under that threshold ) , you and the 413' will get along just fine.

I don't exceed about 1,600 fps with mine.

Everything the others said plus this is Lyman's version of the Squibb bullet. Belding, Cramer and Hensley and Gibbs also had versions, so it was a very popular bullet "back in the day".

I decided to forego the problems this mold has at higher velositys and will instead look for the 311291 mold.

Thanks for the help guys, I'm sure to have more questions, Steve

It has worked fine for me in 7.5 Swiss at modest velocities. I have been told that
at higher velocities it doesn't do as well, but have never tried that, so can't say.

7.5 Swiss is .308 under slightly different dimensions, effectively. Pretty much same
powder capacity, same bore diam, etc. You can use the same loading data IME,
although I wouldn't push to max .308 loads with it.

Its perfect for the 300 BLK. Because of the small case capacity, the max velocity of about 1800 fps with this boolit and cartridge with a load of 18gr of AA1680 that is 2MOA at 100 yards in my AR.

Also works just fine in my 308 Win and other 30 caliber cartridges as long as I keep the velocity under 1900fps.

I had one HP'd with a .100" cavity pin and it shoots well in my Number 1 Ruger at velocities around 1900 FPS with no adverse problems. Great bullet for the 06./beagle
