I bought a can of IMR 4198 and a can of IMR 4064 at a garage sale the other day. Both cans full with the seal intact. My question: I want to load the 4198 for my .223 using a 62gr SP jacketed bullet. Anyone have any ideas? I can't find anything in the reloading manuals I have or on the Hodgdon load data site.
BTW, got each can for $5.00.

Speer Manual #14 - same loads as listed in #13 - no listing for 62gr & 70gr bullets.
Hodgdon online - 60 GR. HDY V-MAX IMR IMR 4198 .224" 2.250" 18.3 2795 42,500 PSI 19.5 2945 52,000 PSI
69 GR. SIE HPBT IMR IMR 4198 .224" 2.235" 18.3 2706 46,300 PSI 19.5 2818 52,300 PSI

These loads listed came directly from the sources provided. I have done no shooting with any of them, and cannot recommend any of them. As always stated in the manuals, start at the minimum listed load, and work your way up 1/10 of a grain at a time, until optimum load is reached. Do not exceed maximum loads. Have fun.

Oh, BTW, great buy you got on those two cans. Guess I need to start shopping yard sales.....

Good deal on the $5 per can. I believe that I would use it for Pb. I say this due to never personally being able to get good groups with the faster powders with heavier j-words. Actually the 4064 would fit your desire better. Kinda hard to get those large grains in a .224 neck though.

Went out to the shop and loaded a test load of 18.0 under the 62gr SP (sierra) and they went bang with light recoil. I like the way they shoot and I load them to the crimp groove which makes them 2.26". Thanks to everyone for the assistance.
