There is supposed to be a double 10 gauge made supposedly in the 1860's for sale south of here. The seller says he doesn't think it would be safe to shoot, but the pictures actually look pretty decent for what it is.

I believe they are of the finest manufacture. The epitome of beauty and function and strength. Created by my direct ancestors.

I tried a few times to call the guy, but always got a busy signal. It was at a price for a wallhanger, so it is probably gone anyway.

I have seen a couple of the Mortimer shotguns that are originals and have one here I restored a couple of years back in a side lever double that takes a 2 1/2 inch 12 gauge shotgun shell. The quality of the original Mortimer guns is pretty good ... they were well made. Like all older guns how they were taken care of has a lot to do with being able to shoot them. I found one double in a muzzle loader that I was interested in but the fellow that had it wanted close to $600 for it and neither hammer would stay on half cock so some lock repairs and possible parts having to be made would have been needed in order to make it safe to shoot.

This side lever Mortimer was cast off for a left handed shooter and being left handed it pointed correctly for me when the gun was shouldered. It needed repair to the firing pin on the right side, 3 dents had to be removed from the barrels, a repair had to be made to the forearm wood, one hammer screw was missing and it needed a lot of dirt and soot removed from the wood from being a wall hanger when I got it. Both barrels are of cylinder bore. I will put two pictures of it up here just to show the workmanship typical of a Mortimer shotgun.

Workmanship on the muzzle loaders that I have seen is of the same quality.
