Was thinking of using the rear sight holes to attach the base. Does anyone make a mount? Are there any mounts that have a high enough base to clear the wood that I might rework?

The other thing you can do is get a long weaver base , trim the bottom part to fit the opening in the top handguard wood, and drill it to match the existing rear sight holes. That way you don't mess up the rifle and you can return it to original when ever you want to.

It all depends what type of scope you're going to use. I try to buy up those old Mossberg/Wollensak type scopes, and use Lyman/Unertyl type bases and rings. It just looks old timey, and if you shop well, they're chee....inexpensive.
