HI Ya All, my buddies are selling off cases full of solder, in rolls. some 40/60, some 50/50, some 60/40 etc. what's it worth to smelters?
I could buy and resell here if it will come out to advantage after schlepping it around all day.

Max, the schlep, much obliged,

Scrap pewter (over 90% tin) has been going for $8 a pound in the swapping and selling for a while now. Figure the tin percentage in the solder and divide. You'll have a hard time getting much for it unless it is solid wire. Most folks don't want to deal with acid or rosin core solder unless they pick it up dirt cheap.

Max:

Yeah, I agree!

I typically buy Solder in bars. If I buy roll solder, it has to be solid, no acid or rosin core and clearly labeled as to what it is.

Maximum price for me would be about $5.00 per pound for 50/50. So, 60/40 would be about $6.00 per pound and 40/60 about $4.00 per pound.

I'd only pay the shipping if the lot was large enough to justify it, say 25 lbs. or more.

Sorry, not an offer, just an answer to your question!

there are 29#'s. would that be good for you?
much obliged,
Max

Rosin core is fine in small amounts, rosin = pine sawdust.

I have paid $10/lb for tin, delivered. In other words, 10 lbs of 50/50 solder would get a bid of $50 delivered.

That comes out to $26/lb of Tin. Most of us can buy tin for $10/lb or less. If it is roll solder, rosin core for example, you might do better moving it that way.

Sounds very useful at $11.00 per pound.

Correct to both! Try finding a trane hvac supplier. That's who has the cheapest I've seen. Every other plumbing or hvac place wants $20+.

Its only $11.00 per pound till they try to restock and find that their cost has doubled since the last time they evidently bought a goodly supply awhile back.
You better load up on it while supplies last.

I bought several pounds of 95-5 solder at $8.99 per pound 2 years ago. I took all they had and later the price doubled like everyone else once they re-ordered.

Hmm, good point. I did buy all they had at the time.

At most stores here in Kanada, 1 lb. of 95-5 is $25.

Which is why chasing pewter or buying it in the forum is way to go now. I chase pewter now just becuase the wife and I are having fun doing it. I have 12lbs in the garage waiting to be melted down now. I have about 65lbs of 95/5 that I bought years ago for $6-10/lb and I also pick up all the bar and roll solder that i find at the scrap yard for $1/lb. Those are some options but if I needed it now I would just visit selling forum and buy pewter.

How do you determine the % tin in pewter? Is all pewter the same?

Not interested in buying, just interested. I have way more than a lifetime supply of 40/60 solid wire solder. Sounds like it is either feast or famine, with some buying very cheap and others having to pay current high prices.

No, all pewter is not the same. Some antique stuff has lead in it, but would still be better than 75% tin. Modern hallmarked food service pewter is lead free and ranges from 92-98% tin with the balance antimony and trace copper or bismuth. I use it as pure tin and it works wonderfully.

Well I happened to be getting a heat exchanger at trane just now and they had 10 rolls of 95/5 so I bought them all but got the 10th free as it wasn't in the system! So all said and done $108 for 10lbs.

I would have bought them all too. It's $30-$45 here from the the Rheem dealer or Johnstone.

Nice to see a few HVAC/R guys around here.
