Hey guys.
My buddy just bought a Pedersoli thats been rechamberd to 30/40 Krag.
Has anyone ever slugged the bore on the .30 cal to find out what it is?
This thing leads the bore (heavy) with every cast boolit we've shot in it.
Thinking that it could be the sharp rifling left from the rechambering, but
at wits end at this point. Any info on this would be really helpful.
Thanks,
Denny

Leadhead,

I would suggest that you slug your bore and more importantly slug the throat of the rifle.

What bullets, what alloy and what diameter bullets did you shoot from the rifle? Velocity? Was the bore cleaned of copper fouling?

Sounds like your bullet may be too small for the throat/bore. Once you get your bullet fitted the 30-40 Krag is one of the best cast bullet cartridges. For the optimum aim to make a bullet that when chambered is lightly engraved by the lands on the ogive. In addition the leading band of your bullet should be lightly engraved by the forceing cone.

Have Fun

...............How did it shoot before being rechambered? Since it's having this problem, as JCherry suggests, slug the barrel but also do a chamber cast or at least the front half including the throat and leade.

Don't know how it shot before, as it had already been rechambered before
he bought it. Were not pushing them hot either 16 grs of 2400 to start.
I think your right to do a cast of the chamber, but he's reluctant to do it,
as we always find its a real PITA to do.
Thanks for your input.

.............It just sounds like some mechanical issue to me. Like something is wrong enough to be messing with the slug. I know YOU know enough to have it shooting if it will. Maybe that's why it was sold?

Re: Chamber casting. Make a deal up as below:

I used the brass funnel off an old ML'er powder measure and soldered it to some 1/4" copper tube. Since the casting alloy melts at temps lower then boiling water there is no danger of melting the solder connecting the tube and funnel. Warm the tube up well with a hair dryer before pouring the cerrosafe through. Ideally the chamber area of the gun should be warmed up also for the best casting.

Yea Rick,
The first thing we have to do, is get the lead out as its from one end to the
other. Then do a chamber cast and see what we got.
Probably going to have to get a throating reamer and try to get a champher
on the leade. Time will tell.

Well, we sluged the bore and it is a tight .306 dia.
The lands are .300
Back to the drawing board.

Got pics of the chamber cast? What's the lead or throat look like?
