This is getting ridiculous. Is there anything about this press to justify the selling price?

Not really. It's got several shell holders, presumably Hollywood, but I saw no mention of priming equipment. CH4D has the universal shell holder piece for not a lot of money.

If you want one there was a nice one down in S&S for way less than that.

I was interested in this one because of its 1.5" die capacity. This seems to be an unusual configuation with the one-piece shellholder lift and iron (steel?) body. The only others I've seen like it were aluminum.

That press appears to be a steel press by looks. But then, maybe it is an aluminum refinished that has Not flaked yet. Since it is a one piece shell holder housing, that points to an aluminum press.

The height of the press, judging by sight, appears to be that of the aluminum press. From what I have seen, the steel presses are the short ones or the "Tall Boys" made for Shotshells and Big Game cartridges.

But one thing I definitely know about Hollywoods, they are like Guns, nothing is definite or set in stone. Just when you think you have it down, you find a squirrelly twist.

I have two Hollywood Senior presses, both cast steel. The first one is the shorter Senior, that I bought used in 1963. The second is the taller Senior, that I bought from a forum member a few years ago.

I paid $25.00 for the first one, including a shellholder, primer arm and set of Hollywood .30-06 dies. The second one set me back exactly 10 times what the first one cost, but I consider it worth it.

Hope this helps.

when you look at the side of the shellholder coller where the linkage hooks up you can see the aluminum showing. Sure is in nice condition.

I just assumed it was steel since every other aluminum press I've seen has had badly peeling paint. I can see you're probably right about this one, perhaps it was recently repainted.

Can these aluminum presses resize Cheytac class cartridges? I need one to take to the range but could probably get by with just seating bullets and resize on the Senior turret.

I don't know what Cheytac is.

Even though you can fit a 50BMG in an aluminum press by removing the primer post to gain extra stroke, that's about the only cartridge that comes to mind that I would Not resize.

Also, there is a HUGE difference in weight between the steel and aluminum Hollywood Senior presses. This may be a consideration as a range press.

Yeah, but these model Hollywoods are not made anymore!

The prices of 69 Z/28's and 70 Hemi Cuda's just keep going up and up!

The machined surfaces appear to be aluminum to me as well.
I am surprised nobody asked that question (or the seller did not post their question !).

Hi,
You got a point Lube! Certain single stage reloading presses are going through the roof! Most of 1950/60 vintage!

This is what my large Hollywood press looks like compared to the Rockchucker mounted next to it:

This one will size both .50 BMG and the Cheytac, but you'd need a trailer to haul it back and forth to the range.....

Hope this helps.

Keep in mind Fred's H/W Senior is steel, Plus, a "Tall Boy", Plus, it has the swaging support rod. All three, HUge bonuses for 50 BMG!

Hi,
This is off the top of my head but on the tall seniors, I think the aluminum weigh 16#s and the steel are 36#s there is a difference! Mine is aluminum but feel it would still resize 50 cal?

You have your numbers pretty close there SG.

The regular Senior weighs about 27.7 LBs. The aluminum shaves off about 10 or so. Now the steel Tall Boy is 37.7 with Swage rod.

Keep in mind for the Big 50 that the steel Tall Boy is over an inch taller than the aluminum at 15 1/4 in. That's why Fred's press looks so towering for a Senior.

My tall Senior press is one heck of a press. I've swaged lots of bullets on it, and it's perfect for loading my .45-120 Sharps rounds, since the case is 3.25" long. The regular Senior is a tad short for that round. I've loaded lots of the .45-120's on it, but have to feed the bullet up into the seating die, hold it in place, and then place the case in the shell holder. With the tall Senior, there's plenty of working room.

Hope this helps.
