Which weapon has the longer cyclinder to handle a heavy 38 cal bullet, the Black Hawk or the GP100?
Bullets or in the 180-200gr range.
Thanks

Lefty

Mr. Red -
I don't have the answer to your question but I really enjoyed your signature line - one of the top 5 movies ever made!

I have a Black Hawk, the cylinder is 1.642" long.
Some one will come in the the GP100 in a bit.

GP100 can handle 200gr no problem. Also built like a tank.

I was hoping someone would say that about the GP100! I love the BH, but like the 357 in a double action platform.
Wishing I never got rid of my 4" GP. It would ring the 6" gong at 100 yards all day long with 158grs. Hoping this 6" I am looking at will do the same if not better!

I have a Redhawk .357 (recently acquired) it will take a long boolit. It took me a long time to find one and I hope soon to find the time to experiment with long .38's and .357's.

I figured the BH would have a longer cyclinder. But that should be enough for the 200gr. The 180grs for sure.
Thanks Again!

I've shot 230gr bullets in my GP-100. It all depends on how you seat them.

I can tell you the Hornady 180gr XTP HP with dual crimp groves would just barely fit into my Blackhawk cylinder when crimped in the bottom grove. My Redhawk would easily handle that length but the cylinder measures 1.75inches in length.

Another issue might be the width of the SWC shoulder. I have a NOE 158Gr SWC that I have to crimp over the shoulder to get it to chamber in my GP100. The front edge of the shoulder bumps into the end of the throat.

I want a Redhawk in 41mag so bad! But would be very happy with one in 357mag too!

I had similar issues with my 41mag and seating 265 bullets.

The Miha 359640 is a no go in my GP100 because the nose profile hits the taper at the end of the chamber where it starts the cylinder throat. Length isn't the issue, it is the nose shape. Not an issue in my BH.

there are tons of good heavywieght molds out there to accommodate any cylinder lentgh in .357 magnum. i use an old NEI mold that drops a whww bullet weighing in @ 193grains after lubing and seating a hornady gascheck. sweet shooting truncated cone style that seats to 1.625 COAL when crimped in crimp groove. can run it harder but settled on 1200fps using H4227 as my universal .357 load. am using it in 4 S&Ws and 2 Contender barrels with fantastic results. i increase the powder charge in my 2 .357Maximums and un same slug 1600plus depending on whether its the 14"contender or the 10-1/2 ruger
