Hi all,

I am looking for a particular mold...here's my story...

About 12 years ago I was at a Cowboy Action competition and one of the vendors there was selling cast bullets...sorry...boolits... anyway, they are .452 diameter, 205 grain, round nose flat point (RNFP) bullets with one lube channel and a shallower channel that had no lube, but was right at the seating depth that worked best. I bought 1,000 of em. and used them to handload 45 Colt cartridges for my Ruger Vaquero pistols and my Henry Golden Boy lever gun. Shortly after I bought them, I took a 10 year hiatus from the shooting sports, but now that my son is old enough to compete, I dug out the reloading gear and got set up to compete again (this time in USPSA, 3-Gun, and Action Steel). And this time I decided to cast my own bullets...er...boolits... rather than buy 'em like I used to.

I had about 500 of those fabulous cast bullets left, and started loading them in 45 Auto for me and my son. They are the most accurate, best feeding bullets I've ever had. I have a favorite load with them (5.4 gr of Accurate #2) that hits the sweet spot for my 1911 Colt .45 Government Model and my particular shooting skills (such as they are).

Alas, I am down to my last box of 100. So, I began a search for a mold to make those same bullets. The closest I've come is the 452-200-RF double cavity mold from Lee Precision, but it's not exactly the same. The Lee mold produces bullets that have two lube channels and I need to seat them down to 1.185". The magic bullets were seated at 1.20".

I've looked through all the catalogs I can find...but no joy. I was hoping one of you might know where I can look next for the mold that makes my "magic bullets". Here's a photo...

Thanks!

What was the brand name of your factory cast boolits?

the lee mold only makes one lube grove. the other one is a crimp grove. the Lee 452-200-RF is the one you are looking for.

Magnus Bullets (magnusbullets.com/catalog.htm) #809 also matches your specs and does not require seating as deeply as the Lee round.

If you still have some, you could have it duplicated by Tom at Accurate moulds. then you could have exactly what you want.

The smaller groove on top is a crimp groove. Thats a good looking boolit! My lee 200 gr rf has to be seated deeper than the crimp groove as you pointed out. Following this thread with interest

Edit- I just reread your post and see that you need the opposite, longer overall length.

I don't know....I am pretty sure it was just a guy who sold bullets that he cast in his garage...that's why I think he had a mold that I could get my hands on...

Check this out.....

http://www.magmaengineering.com/PDF/BBMar122011b.pdf

Their molds are made to fit their casting machines, but can be altered to use Lee or Lyman handles.

That looks like a Dardas Cast Bullet. A company out of Essexville Michigan. Probably came from the Magma mold.
