I some how ended up owning a brand new CVA Pro Mag .50cal inline w/a 1-28 twist. It was part of a multi-gun trade. I have less than a c-note in it so I don't feel to bad about ending up with it.

So now to my question: I know this was made to shoot sabot loads, I hate these things. What would be a good heavy lead bullet to use with is? And what kind of load? Would love to dup. a older BP cartridge used in Africa, just for fun. I have never done paper-patching but could learn.

Thanks, James

Have you tried the CVA Powerbelts? I have good results with the 245gn and 777 pellets in 2 different TC Omegas.

I've never shot one from an inline, but the Lyman Plains bullet (not sure of mold number) has worked well in my Hawken both for accuracy and terminal performance. I think the nominal weight is 410 grains and it hits like a hammer with that big, flat nose.

sounds like your really interested in paperpatch? find out what the top of the lands measurement is and make a mould 8 thousands smaller. 1.2 long. it will weigh about 500 to 550 grain. now a easier way is have a push through reduceing die made 8 thousands smaller then the top of lands measurement. find a reasonable mould of 500 grains about 1.2 long and cast it in pure lead or 1/30 0r 1/20 to one but no harder. push it through and use number nine paper 2 wraps and it will fit your barrel fine. get fiber .60 thousands wads in .50 cal from buffalo arms or .50 felt wads from them. use those between powder and bullet. i prefer black powder in paperpatch but if your in line is 209 primer ing. blackhorn 209 powder works very well with paperpatch. idaho ron uses pyrodox with good results. my young son has a new custom built inline and it shoots paperpatch real well with one drawback. i shot it one shot the other day with 100 grains by volume of blackhorn 209 powder and a 533 grain bullet in front of it. recoil is heavy, and the scope cut me above the right eye. with a paper patch set up and a 500 grain bullet your talking any and i mean any game in north america includeing alaska. also long distance if you should so desire. good luck and have fun.
