I believe it was a sears name but would have been made by any manufacturer under contract for sears. Gun Parts corp west hurley new york may be able to help with parts information. They were basic functional firearms no real frills bells or whistles with them.

"Ranger" was a house brand (sold through the T. Eaton Co. department stores up here) and the guns were manufactured by the "Cooey" company in Canada (Ontario). If you don't have any luck with GunParts Corp you could try Western Gun Parts in Edmonton, Alberta as they will definitely have parts. I don't know if they can export gun parts to the USA or not with the current regulations, but you could contact them and ask?

Looks similar to my H&R shotgun. Harrington and Richardson, I believe. I think they made a lot of guns for the different department stores to put their name on.

That looks identical to a Winchester 370

Yep .. exactly the same gun and action since Winchester bought the Cooey company in Ontario and it became "Winchester / Cooey" after about 1968 or 1969 from memory ... the original Cooey company started out in the 20's and was a Canadian "Arms and Machine" works similar to Iver Johnson and others in the USA.

They also produced contract guns for other companies under the names of "Ace" and "Hiawatha" ...

I have repaired a few old break open shot guns made before 1942 sold by Sears, the most common one to rebuild is the "LONG TOM"

I build up the damaged area with Brownells gel bedding compound and then paint the stocks.

I tried to have the stocks made but the cost was too high for the value of the shot gun.

I'm not familiar with that shotgun, but I know the "ranger" trade name guns were made by numerous manufacturers.

Inherited a pre 20's Caruso with a broken stock my FIL tried to fix. Thought I'd just make anew one but after shooting a 32" 12 ga, 5# I gave it away.

+1 on the 370 Win., 37a also. Winchester made a lot of house models for Sears. Gtek

Looks like many guns but none of the above. Winchester 370 doesn't have the same trigger and Cooey had the company name stamped on the side. <the only place I can see where I could purchase a gunstock would be Boyd but I'd have to have the maker's name.

OK ... with a bit more digging it looks like you might have an "Iver Johnson" Ranger instead. They were made for the department store market similar to the Cooey mfg versions. You might be able to get a buttstock through Gun Parts Corp in NY for yours if it is the Iver Johnson mfg version, but again if they don't have it give the guys up at Western Gun Parts a buzz or send them an email and see if they have one on hand that they could send you. (If you have access to a fax machine they have a Toll Free Fax number for North America.)

At some point I think everyone has used shot one of these single shot shotguns. We have an eastern arms 410 at the farm. Every boy in the family learned to hunt with that shotgun along with pretty much every boy in the nieghborhood. It was "loaned out" for several years while others used it. But It has a long and proud past starting new hunters out.

That's a Winchester 370. The butt stock from a Win 37a might fit. Any 37a I've seen always had the up-swept hammer.

surely gonna be a kicker tho. I had a shotgun that resembles that as a kid... it kicked the livin hack outta me and when I sniveled to my dad he proceeded to make fun of me calling me all manner of unkind things at which time I invited him to shoot the thing himself. he took me up on the invitation and when ... in the front yard ... he snapped the killer shotgun to his shoulder and let fly a cloud of # 5 shot I had attempted to harvest duck's with. when the roar drifted into the atmosphere he looked at that lite shotgun and muttered ... "by damn that thing really does kick". he also muttered ... "ill fix that rite now". where upon he dug out the salt water fishing box and rounded up three of the 1 ounce lead fishing weights. he unscrewed the buttstock plate and after pounding the weights into a round rod he tapped them into the buttstock hole that the screw goes thru. after filling that hole with lead he used a hacksaw to remove the protruding lead left over sticking out of the hole in the buttstock. after sawing this protrusion off he re-installed the buttplate and ... muttering ... "lets see what that does for ya". he then went back out into the front yard and ... loading the horror again ... shouldered it and let fly another cloud of #5's into the air. then handing the killer back to me he said ... "there". ... so ... determined to not be the anatomy member he had unkindly called me ... I loaded another high base shell containing a full load of those #5's ... I shouldered it yet again and ... with heart pounding in my ears ... I let fly BRAVELY and a smile began to envelope my face as the realization that "it were a shooter now" sank into my befuddled mind.

I harvested many quail and grouse as well as flying ducks with that fine shotgun and the butt weight that made the buttstock hang heavier then the long barrel. BUT ... the shotgun went magically from a killer on both ends to a fine shooter that enabled this kid to do more then make noise and get a sore shoulder.

FIX IT PARD ... SHOOT IT ... ENJOY THAT OL GIRL !!!

Bigted,
Good story. Will keep that in mind once I find a stock for it. Someone in the family took it apart and misplaced the buttstock, forend and forend spacer probably in an attempt to clean it all or whatever and I couldn't find them anywhere. My brothers don't remember cause this happened long time ago.
You gave me some good ideas whith this lead in the stock cause I have been having trouble skeet shooting with my Mossberg 395KA, kicks and not precise at all.
Thanks

I borrowed a single barreled 12 from my father-in-law that had a plastic butt stock. It hurt to shoot and I never hit any birds with it. About a year later I saw the same gun with a broken stock. Seems he thought it kicked hard also so he filed the hollow stock with gravel and shot it. That was the end of the plastic stock.

I don't remember the name of the gun but it had a plastic stock on it,it kicked so hard that it hurt to shoot it.I put some # 4 shot in the stock and it started to bust the sock at once, took the shot out and gave it back to my wife's uncle, told him what had happened he said that he never shot the gun and put it back on the wall and later a fire took care of the old gun.

I have one in twenty ga. from Sears and it looks just like yours. I do believe it was made by Winchester as the model 37.

That is NOT a 37. Winchester 37 has a very unique hammer which is located BEHIND the opening lever.
The model 37 is worth considerably more than the 370 or 37A. Big difference between the 37 and the other 2.

digger 44: Yes you are right. After looking at mine again, mine has the foward hammer but still could be made by Winchester. I had written a thread about mine a few months ago and someone said that it probably was a winchester, I also needed a butt stock. I ended up making one for it. It turned out ok but the comb is too high. It will work for inside the house protection. The barrel has been cut off to 18 1/2". I keep buck shot handy for it.

45-70 , Yes all 4 of the pics are guns made by Winchester.
