I have been looking for a while now at buying one for use during squirrel season, can anyone make a recommendation as to a good manufacture, The 31 caliber seems appealing to me.

I believe Traditions still make's a 32 cal. , I you find a T/C Cherokee in 32 they are good shooters as well . They are a lot of fun to shoot and easy on the powder & lead supply

Thanks I will look into that. I just want something a little more challenging than the 22 for gathering my red squirrels .. I thought it would be fun.

Probably not more challenging but a LOT of fun is the TC .56 SB (smooth bore), which equates to a 28 ga shotgun. I use a light charge and 1/2 oz of shot. One of the more enjoyable things I do from time to time.

I make all my own ML's ...so My squirrel gun is a custom made Bucks County in 40 caliber Which was bored out from a .32 caliber by Bobby Hoyt. The .32 I felt was totally unmanageable (I mean clean after each shot) after Bobby did his thing ...well all I can say it is a tack driver

Can't say I am setup for making one. I could assemble a pre made kit, but I have no lathe or mill so I have to either stick with the kits or pre made guns.

Or you can order one from me!

I would go .36 or .40.

As neat as that idea sounds , I am betting its out of my price range.

I had a 36cal TC Seneca that I sold in a fit of stupor. Very nice rifle! I ended up replacing it with a 32cal CVA Squirrel rifle that has been custom stocked by Mike Lang over in Dillsboro, IN. She's a beauty now and a really great shooter! I think I prefer the 36 calibers over the 32's because they don't require as much swabbing between shots, but there's really no need for the extra lead on those little critters. Wouldn't hesitate taking a bead on anything up to (and including) coyotes with it for sure.

For me and with Indiana's regulations, I have no need for anything as large (or small) as a 40 cal. 32-36 for small game and need something at least 45 or up for whitetail. 36 is a great choice, but in the same breath, wouldn't trade my 32 for one either...

Traditions wouldn't be a bad choice. The little Squirrel rifle can be found reasonably from time to time (used), but be warned that there is not enough drop in the comb for even children to be able to shoot (hence the restock). Senecas and Cherokees are just about right and can be found in 32, 36, and 45 calibers, but are getting very hard to come by, expensive as all get out, and impossible to find replacement stuff for without paying a mint.

I have a .32 Traditions Crockett which is accurate, reliable and fun to shoot. I can shoot it all day without wiping and it's no more trouble to clean than my .50. The .32 is THE perfect small game caliber. It can duplicate the .22LR or exceed the .22mag. Squirrels to coyotes, it doesn't matter; the .32 can handle it. They also foul no worse than any other caliber. Mine has earned its keep taking bushytails.

A few years ago I had a flint SMR .36 built and it is my go-to small game rifle. It can be loaded to about equal the loads of the .32 if squirrels are on the menu; or can be jazzed up to serious power. Either will serve better than anything larger if you want a small game gun.

The .32 Crockett.
