New Grips for the GP100?

I got a set of one piece grips for my 1987 GP. The question I have is how do you get the big aluminum cylinder out of the frame? On my new GP, that piece is free and goes in after you slide the grips on. On the old gun it is in the frame and I can not slide the grips on. Does it have to be pressed out?

On all the GP-100's that I have seen, it practically falls out when the grips are taken off. I would support the frame and then try to gently tap it out, there could be a burr on thee frame or the aluminum pin keeping it in.
