I'm building an M-40 "wantabe" ie, LH 700 HB 308, Choate stock, $$$ scope, ect. to play with on my clubs new 300 Yd. range. I'm thinking I need a 200 +-gn bullet over a 165 / 170 gn.
I'm thinking of starting with 28 IMR 4895 and a 311299 or RCBS 200 Sil.

Wayne,

That sounds fine on the low end. In my experience 30 grs. of either 4064, Varget or RL15 is in the right ballpark with #311299 or similar in either the .303 British or .308 Win. Essentially identical case capacity.

Good place to start as mentioned. If you've not got the barrel yet I suggest a 26" barrel with 12" twist.

Thanks, luckily I found some Varget so there is another powder to try, Larry, the 26" 1-12 is what it has. Should be some interesting testing, as I have a 308 1-10 bbl for my Savage swap bbl., and the 1-11 on an M1A. Also cleaned out a "rat hole" and found some old IMR 4831, thought Id follow Bruce B's M1A data with that powder, now to find some Mag. primers

If you have any RL7, IMR8208M, or H322 those also work well, 28-30 grs. with #311299.

You are definitely off to a great start. If the chance rolls around don't hesitate to try the Lyman 311466 or the LBT 150, especially over RL19 or AA4350.
