Does anyone know of a source for SWC HP boolits in the 245gr+ range that would be appropriate for a rifle chambered in 45 Colt? I've looked far and wide and can't locate any. I'm trying to get some loads worked up for when I'm home on leave over the Thanksgiving holiday. I'll have a few days to hunt whitetails. Thank you.

You might think about purchasing one of the Forester HP tools, they work great.

if you already have a mould send it to hollow point mould service, you'll find it on the web.he has done several for me and his machine work is excellent.i like the inset bar conversion but he can also do the old bottom pin for single cavity moulds.call him or email for what you want.turn around time is pretty quick.like i said been real happy with mine.

I'm not set up to cast so that is out a ways for me. I'll look into the Forester HP tool. Thank you.

I think you mean Forster. Might help in your search with the correct spelling.

Try NOE. I got a nice mold from them.

Lee made a nice SWC HP for the .45. They pop up on FleaBay occasionally. That mould casts a real nice boolit.

I think you are going to have to make them yourself. I had Erik HP a RCBS 270SA, makes a great LHP.

one more suggestion, you might try rim rock bullets they have some gas checked hp's in stock.not cheap but might be the way to go if you just need a few for hunting.haven't tried them myself but i hear that they are real good quality.

Thanks for the suggestions. Those Rim Rock bullets look perfect even if pricey.

I was really exited about HP cast boolits for awhile. Since then I learned that a big bore really doesn't need them to quickly take down a deer. A HP cast is very effective in a fairly narrow range of velocity, too fast and the HP breaks off, too slow and it doesn't expand. Also if the lead is to hard or brittle then they can break up if they hit bone or even for no other reason that the antimony in the lead doesn't want to expand and hold together. Don't get me wrong, I still like the concept and load 429421 hollow points to medium velocity in my 44 special and 44 mag.

For hunting deer with a 45 caliber I would stick with a solid that has a large meplat. Deer are thin skinned and light boned so they don't need a very heavy slug. For deer a 250 to 270 gr works very well and has taken tens of thousands of deer very cleanly. Like Keith said, a big hole going in and a big hole going out lets a lot of air in, and a lot of blood out. The solid slug is much more forgiving of whatever lead mix its composed of. It insures complete penetration and if your lead quality is anywhere near where it should be then it won't break up if it hits solid bone.

Rimrock Bullets stocks them. They're the same bullets Buffalo Bore uses in their "Deer Grenade" loading.
