Hi folks! I'm relatively new here; I found the site after purchasing a set of Corbin dies and wanted to experiment with making my own swaging dies.

The Corbin jackets weren't long enough for the weight I wanted. The Corbin solution was to buy a larger caliber jacket and draw each one down. That seemed silly (the extra labor plus buying extra dies). So I decided to have-a-go at making my own jackets.

By way of background, I'm a "semi-professional" machinist - I do it as a side gig, about half for fun, half "jobs" for others. I'm by no means professionally trained.

I documented the process behind making my first steel blanking & drawing die. The die takes a 1" copper strip, blanks out a 0.700" coin and, in the same down stroke, cups and draws it out to 0.500 diameter.

I haven't made the second draw die yet, but I'm hopeful I can achieve the 0.353" jacket diameter in just one more draw.

A big shout out to Dave A, KTN, and others who have posted helpful info and even chimed in on the design.

As mentioned, I am not an experienced bullet swager nor tool/die guy - so this is all been a wonderful experience with a steep learning curve.

My goal, and some may call it crazy, is to now make a "proper" die out tool steel with die set and even have 'transfer die' functionality so that I can go from strip to jacket (ready to swage) with one die. Ambitious - but one step at a time. It's all for fun.

There are nine videos in the series ; it may be more detail than some care for - so feel free to skip around. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9tn9rGywKUXI2SDxGwI0YeYyMsUcWOqW

I just watched them all. Almost wanted to buy those machines to make such tools.
Good job go on like this

I've been making a set of O1 tool steel drawing dies. Haven't done videos yet because I want to make sure I like the results before I go running-my-mouth on camera. But drew the "cups" (0.500 diameter") down through the first drawing die (0.425 OD) and was very pleased with the result. This reduced the wall thickness from ~0.023 to 0.020" and increased the length from 0.165" to 0.388".

One more draw should get it down to my goal OD of 0.352.

Here's the video on drawing down from the cupped blank to final size! I'll continue to do more videos as I learn and feel comfortable sharing "knowledge"! http://youtu.be/M10Z-1ZStdo

It's AMAZING how shiny the jackets come out of the drawing dies!!

Nicely done!

I can here the smile on your face :)

I have felt the same way, success with your own tools and being able to make something is pretty darn cool. Of course the opposite is true too, I'm a very patient guy but I have never experienced more frustration then when things don't go the way they should when making swage die tools. Obviously you got it figured out, stick with it!

Good shooting and swage on!

p.s. great pics!

BT - Thanks! Really appreciate the commentary and feedback. I DO intend to keep with it - it's a heck of a lot of fun! Combining machining and shooting is as good as it gets!!

Thanks for all YOUR input, posts, etc - a great source a knowledge!
