So I've been reading some of the past posts, and it appears that I can use H-4895 when IMR-4895 is called out? I get a little leary about things like this. In the past 30 years that I have been loading, I have'nt deviated much from posted load data. But these are deperate times around here, with powder supplies being as they are. Does anyone know which, if either burns faster?

http://www.hodgdon.com/burn-rate.html and if you look at the load data for hodgdons site which also includes imr it would appear they are vastly different http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp at least for 308 168 which was the only one i looked up before posting

You can go to the Hodgdon website and look at load data showing both H4895 and IMR 4895 for the same cartridge and boolit.

Didn't mean to reiterate what you said mongoosesnipe. You must have posted right after I went to http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp to check my info.

The burn rates are different, but for the cartridges that I load for, they are usually within about 1/2gr of each other. I have noted different velocities between the two even when the loads are quite similar. Of course, consult your loading manual. If you are asking if they can be used in a given cartridge, usually I would say yes, but would still defer to the manual. Never had one blow up, yet. Really don't want to start.

You use less H than IMR. You can fill a 308 case with IMR, you can not with H.
According to the research my bud has done for his M1a

Once you get past the girl caliber, odd six & win mag dont really matter.
I use IMR, he uses H, we shoot neck and neck

Thanks for the info Guys. The website helped out. Guess I'll save those two lbs. of H for the wifes J-loads.

I'be had great success with IMR 4895 in .30 WCF with cast boolits. As soon as my other powders are used up it will be all I use in that cartridge.

Just load light enough for either powder. You probably will not be able to tell the difference.

For my 30-30 I have 311041 and lee 170 (close to the same) what charge weight did you use? Velocity?
