Be sure to slug your bore before buying anything else. Seams the modern RCBS cowboy die set ( 4 dies ) is the best to start out with. I'm sure you are going to have many more questions on this one soon. When you buy your brass, make sure to buy the Starline brass, thinner at the mouth of the case, you will be able to use larger boolits and still have the loaded round chamber. Think the Starline that has a OAL of 2.085 might work out best for that one. Winchester brass is to thick at the case mouth to use the larger boolits you are going to have to use without reworking them more than most are able to.

I'll be following this thread. I'm in the market for a new lever rifle and considering either a 38-55 or a like-new 7-30 waters.

I shot with a fellow recently who had a vernier style tang sight - the gunsmith had to mill out the bottom of the sight base to make it fit over the tang mounted safety. Looked great, but I think the safety was non-functional after the modification.

Keep us posted - got photos? We always like photos.

kb7tgr, you want to talk to CoColt, he has the same rifle and is now setting up for it as well. See the other thread, Zero for 38-55. He could be a little further down the road on this project. He is sure to have some good info on this one.

Put Tang sight on and loaded a few test loads. Set target at 30 yards. 5 rounds and it is zero. Shot 5 more rounds and can cover them with a quarter. Not bad for shooting off the tailgate of the pick up with a old shirt crumpled up to protect the rifle. Loaded two more rounds with a little more powder (still three grains under max.) they went about 1.5 inches high and split each other.

So far very happly
