A Nanovault might be just the thing for you.

Remember when you could have a gun rack in the rear window of your pickup with rifles and shotguns in it and you didn't have to worry about someone stealing them even if you left your windows down?

NO, I don't remember any time like that.

OK, I guess some of us are a bit older... Or lived in more honest places...

And keys in the ignition - and UPS guy would see your rig in town and just put the package on the front seat so he didn't have to drive all the way to your house. - yeah, I remember but now I live in a big city and different times and that's a distant memory.

Couple guys I work with just got this safe from Bulldog and are quite happy with it. They got them for around $55 on line.

How about a real set of handcuffs? Inexpensive, and you can lock it away from thieves. Put one cuff through the triggerguard, and one through the seat frame etc.

I have 2 sizes made by Stack-On with an aircraft cable tether and 3 button 8 digit code. I worry about the quality of fingerprint based security. I'm happy after more than a year with each of them.

I am a "bit older" and remember perfectly well when someone stole a gun out of a man's truck when we were at a rural shooting range in 1956.

I've been eyeballing this one for a while. I really like the fact that it can be bolted to a hard surface and is secure from sliding about in the vehicle.

Hollow out a set of Yellow Pages and keep it on the dashboard along with a few old bills and a used notepad or two, make it look "natural". In a vehicle, the best hiding place is in plain sight.

I'm not even 40 yet and I always had a .22 in the back window of my unlocked pickup in the student parking lot back in high school, sometimes a shotgun or .30-30 as well, and I wasn't the only one. Now they don't even allow students to carry pocketknives, I remember a few of my classmates always wore fixed-blade hunting knives on their belts. I also remember there were only one or two fights, and no hostage/bomb/mass-shooting scenarios. Funny how that works.

that would work but if i ever got stopped by a LEO and searched my truck and i had a
set of handcuffs in the truck and a pistol on me i just think it would look odd

There's always the cable locks supplied with all new handguns now. I have a box of them. Handcuffs all have the same by BTW.

Actually, I've been stopped more than once by LEO's and many commented on my handcuffs. (I keep mine attached to the steering wheel when not in use.) After I mention I use them to lock up my firearm, I usually get a nice reply. But now I can add to the comment that my son is LEO & since I'm associated with the NC Wildlife Commission, (I do animal control) it's not an issue.
Proper answers get positive results!

Yes, my high school parking lot was full of them.

I have one of these, works well. Not super secure, a few minutes with a
sledge hammer would probably have it open, but it will sure slow them down
and the cable will keep it in the car pretty well.

It's not necessarily the time that it would take to open it, but rather the time it would take to remove the entire device from your vehicle. I suspect that even a small set of bolt / cable cutters could remove that in very little time.

A little more than $100. Ok a lot more. But these are a nice option. They bolt into your console no mods to it. It uses existing screws.

I installed this one in my truck last year and have never regretted it.

I suspect that it depends upon how hardened of a target you want to make your truck gun safe. What sort of attacks do you want to be able to resist and how long do you want to be able to resist them? Do you just want it to be able to resist and attack from bare hands? What about pry bar and small hand sledge hammer? What about a angle grinder or abrasive cutoff tool? You can't make it impervious to all attacks since at some point, the attacker just cuts the sheet metal of the floorboard of the truck around it and takes the safe and the section of floorboard that it was mounted to. If it is bolted to the floorboard, the bolts have to come through the floorboard and the nuts will be visible on the bottom. You can slow them down by welding the nut to the bolt threads, but with enough ft-lbs of torque, the bolt can just be twisted off anyway.

Do you have the ability to do metalwork yourself? If so, it would be fairly easy to design something that could be mounted to the floorboard and would be rather impervious to anything up to a prolonged attack by a grinder. Basically a shroud mounted to the floorboard out of thick steel (1/2" would be plenty) and then a drawer / container that slid inside of the shroud that was also made of thick metal which you could put your handgun into. You would then need some sort of locking mechanism to keep the "drawer" within the shroud. I would probably use something based on a lock and hasp like this (http://www.padlockoutlet.com/A800LHC-American-Lock-High-Security-Hasp-with-Solid-Steel-Padlock-2-7-8-72mm.html):

http://www.padlockoutlet.com/images/D/A800LHC%20copy.jpg

Of course, a lot is going to depend upon how your truck is laid out / how much space you have inside of it. You might be able to put it under the seat, but some electrical seats might not give you enough room for this option. In a 4-door pickup, I would probably try to put it under one of the front seats and then have it only accessible from the back floorboard area. If you put it in a cramped enough area, the attacker will not have much room to work and to bring heaver tools to bear upon it. If it was cramped enough, you might even be able to get away without having to use the shrouded security hasp with the hidden shackle lock in the above photo. If there is not any room to get levers or hammers in there, you could probably even get away with something as simple as a motorcycle disc brake lock that prevented the drawer from being able to slide out, but you might have to go with only 1/4" thick steel for the shroud.

Most locks like that can be opened with a few hits from a hammer. Unless you can position that box such that there is no room to swing a hammer, it's not going to withstand much of an attack.
