Now, it's getting the accessories that costs.

This 1892 32-20 was made in 1910

I'll order the Lee 3 Die Set for 32-20. The description says it includes the expander die. Will I still need a "M" die to flare the case mouth for Boolits, or will the Lee expander die perform this operation? If not, I'm also ordering a Lyman .30 Short M die to use in the 30.30. Would this work for the 32-20?

I'm looking at the Lee Mould - here

Is the nose on the Boolit "flat enough" to use in this rifle's tubular magazine? I can get the RCBS mould for a lot more bucks, but I have had nothing but good luck with the Lee moulds I have.

I know you guys know!

Thanks in advance.
Jeff

LEE makes a mold for the .32WCF, flat nose and gas check. C309-113F/90362 I have one and it casts a very nice boolit.

Jeff,

The Lee .32/20 set has a powder through expanding die that will flair the case to seat cast bullets without shaving lead. Tubular magazines can use flat nose bullets OR round nose bullets. The Lee RN bullets work fine in tubular magazines. By the way, nice 92. I have a round barrel rifle in .38/40 that is it's older brother, shipped in 1892. They are a hoot with cast. Good luck.

RCBS Cowboy dies have an expander die, could order another Cowboy expander for your 30-30. Lee has a 93 gr SWC PB TL mould as well. Should be a fun plinker in your 30-30 too.

Oh yes, nice rifle!

I had a Marlin in 32/20; it was a nice gun but was hard on brass. You definitely need an expander die as the mouth on this brass is very tin. I was using new win brass & I got neck splits on every single piece of once fired brass. The gun was made in 1936 & I don't know if there was head space issues or what.

If you were getting neck splits it wasn't a headspace issue, it was either an overly large chamber diameter at the neck or a brass issue.

Yes, the brass is thin and you need to be careful sizing and seating boolits in the neck. Bumping a piece of brass on the edge of the die because it isn't fully seated in the shell holder is a standard way to ruin a piece of brass! Starline makes the best brass, a touch thicker in the neck than the rest.

This is a 32-20, not a 32 Win! You want a small, relatively light boolit. 120gr is probably close to the max of what you want. I shoot from a 98 gr to 117gr out of mine.

Thank You for your comments and great info. I have the Lee 309-113F mould. But, the new 32-20 slugs out at .313.

So, I just missed a RCBS #32-098-SWC on Ebay, but ordered one from Midway, new, in stock, for just a couple bucks more than the winner on Ebay will pay. Also, ordered Starline brass, the Lee 3-Die set, M-Die, Lee Universal expander. My wife will have to cancel the new drapes, I guess. Everything I ordered was in stock, so I might be shooting this rifle by next weekend.
Thanks Again! I'll report back after I put a few downrange.

Beautiful rifle!!!

Just acquired one of those myself, not as nice as yours, but shootable. Someone ruined the magazine tube, end cap and furrell, getting parts for it now.

So what powder and weight do you guys use? I'm looking at TB or unique or maybe 2400, hard to believe 3-4 grains will push the bullet out of a 24" barrel.

If you happen across a Lyman or Ideal 311316 mold might consider grabbing it. It is THE bullet specifically designed for the 32-20 Winchester rifle using smokeless powder. I have a couple original 32-20 Winchester levers. They like the 311316 bullet. My mold, an Ideal, drops at .313 on the bands. After running through a Lee .313 sizer the bands stay at .313, the gas check crimps on securely yet springs back to .314. I use a Lyman M die, fairly soft alloy, soft lube and a very light crimp. 11.5 gr of Alliant Rel 7 yields a very accurate load with a muzzle velocity of about 1220.

Had the same experience when I ventured into 32-20 several months ago, seemed a little odd but I liked it! Looking forward to a range report.
