The Best Traditional Banana Bread Recipe

A traditional loaf recipe with just a touch of spice. Feel free to toss a cup of nuts or raisins in this recipe. (No chocolate for this one though as the spice will compete too much.)

Ingredients:

1 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter, soft
3 bananas
2 eggs
1 tsp soda, dissolved in 1 Tbsp cold water
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Combine and mix all ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. Place batter in a greased bread pan or in muffin tins. Bake 40 to 50 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes then remove from pan. Complete cooling on a wire rack.

(This recipe only makes one good sized loaf, so I double it up, add some raisins and make two loaves at a time.)

Just looking at the pictures-------- am heading to the store and getting some bananas !!!!!!!

I always watch the "special clearance" shelf at our local grocery store just down the road as they often have overly ripe bananas for sale at 1/2 price. I buy them all and put them into our freezer where they turn completely black when frozen, but keep very well until you want to bake with them. Just take them out and thaw them on your kitchen counter a couple of hours before you want to use them and when you go to put them into the recipe mix just "snip" off the top of the banana skin with a kitchen knife and then "squeeze" out the soft "runny" banana from the bottom to the top just like pushing up a kid's frozen "icicle" treat in it's long thin plastic sleeve. They're the perfect texture after being frozen to bake with and this technique for squeezing them out of their skins after they are thawed is quick, easy, and virtually mess free!
So now ya know!

Leave it to a Canadian to know how to freeze his bananas!

... or the alternative is to just leave the bananas on the passenger's seat of your car that you've parked for the duration of the Canadian winter!

Thanks Gary! I've got lots and lots more recipes (and photos) that I can post, but I keep trying to "pace" myself so that you poor food addicts won't "over-dose"!

I'm new here, but I'll chime in on this. Never met a banana bread I didn't like. Can't wait to try this version. You really CAN smell pictures, ya know. On a different note (kinda) any site that promotes God, guns and goodies has got to be a good place to visit. Glad I stopped in.

I'm going to throw it in the bread machine and see what happens.

Turned out pretty good - I think my baking powder needs replaced
as it turned out pretty dense.

I made a loaf last night. I have a quarter of it left.

I added a big handful of chopped nuts, doubled up on the cinnamon, added half a grated tonka bean (more vanilla flavor), it took an hour to bake in my oven, but it's GOOD!

Wow!...I'm showing this to my wife when she gets up. One could literally eat those pictures! Funny thing though, when I went to my doctor on Friday he told me to not buy any green bananas.
