Picked up about 100 of these at our club range the other day. Definitely 8mmx57, and Berdan primed. Destined for the salvage barrel, but in the meantime my question is: What 8mm rifle does such violence to the case mouths on ejection?

Must have been a semi-auto rifle.

Perhaps the Egyptian Hakim rifle?

I've seen the original Scandinavian version, the Ljungman, at the local range in 6.5 Swedish calibre, but I don't remember it damaging cases quite like those.

Another guess would be the FN 49 chambered in 8mm. Egypt also issued this rifle in 8mm.

I guess you could also list the WWII German G-41(w) or (m) or a G-43 as possible culprits.

My fn49 in 30-06 did that.

FN 49 Venezuelan in 7×57 does that.

I've seen quite a few pieces of brass at our range with similar damage. This has to be expensive.

That's what I like about bolt guns, you can control your brass better.

Hakim or Fn either one and in 6.5 the Lunjmann is also real hard on brass.

I`ve shot German G-43 and K-43 rifles that do that sort of damage. Several friends of mine have Egyptian Hakim rifles that do that much damage and worse.Robert

My Hakim does a variety of things to brass sometimes all of them to the same case.
I never get damage as consistent as the photo but I do get a lot smashed mouths, dented case bodies and horrible dents in the rim from the ejector.

Those look great compared to what my G43 used to spits out. It would almost close the case mouth shut til I put in a shooters kit. Now my brass looks a lot like yours.

My Hakim used to do that... then I foun out that it was caused by the brass hitting the "sling mount"... hey, that's what it looks like, on the bolt. My solution was to split and super-glue a section of rubber hose over it, making a cushion. Now I hardly ever have a dent in my brass.

Anything's possible in our club. At first I thought it might be the guy with the 8mm Vickers belt-feeder, but he usually sets up in a different spot and polices his brass.

Yeah, my hakim does that. Personally I switched to cast lead and 18 gr of 2400. With the gas cranked most of the way open it cycles the action and dumps the cases out nicely with no damage.

My Egyptian FN-49 does that and much worse it will almost close the case mouth and rip a huge chunk of the rim off as it ejects, but ill tell you what I've never had a fail to feed or eject out of it lol

Why would they be destined for the salvage barrel? I have picked up such cases off the range and brought them home. I used a tapered punch to open the mouth. If they are badly crimped, I anneal them first. Occasionally they will split when being resized. But, most are returned to service. I grew up in a 'fix-it' shop, so I tend to do things like that.

Agreed, I see no reason to throw them out until you have pulled a couple of the primers and measured them to see if you can get berdan primers in their size. 8mm brass is hard to come by right now and they definitely have value from that stand point. I have sold them a couple of times to people who load berdan cases. james

Well, first of all I shoot nothing that's chambered 8mm, and second of all nothing I own takes 8mmx57. I'll put up with Berdan primers for a rare and interesting cartridge, but not for the prosaic 8mm.

If anybody really wants 'em, P/M me. You cover the cost of a MFRB + a coupla bucks and they're yours. I even ran 'em thru the big tumbler to fill out a load.

That looks just like my cases when I had a Hakim years ago.
