I got a 6 cavity 452-230 RN TL mold that I got day one before deciding what lube and sizing system to use...question is, does anyone here effectively lube size tumble lube grooved bullets in their star? Would there be anything wrong with doing so? Also this is for 45acp through a 1911.....Thanks for the input...also heard 200 grain RN were good to use as well....

I'd think the groves are too small to pressure lube. If the boolits aren't crazy oversized, run through the sizer and tumble lube after. The 45 ACP doesn't need a ton of lube.

A really good bullet for both the .45 acp and .45 Colt is the 200 gr. RNFP designed for Cowboy Shooting. I use it in both and it works great. My mold is from Magma, but I understand others make a similar design.

Hope this helps.

They are just .001 over.... can you tumble lube over soft lube?

Thanks friend. Do you run them in 1911 with no feeding issues? I generally stick with RN TO prevent issues but have heard many people shoot 200's now

If they are only .001 over the size of your bore, I would just tumble lube them and shoot as cast.

carolina556,

I shoot them almost exclusively in my 1911's for paper punching and playing around. The 200 gr. RNFP bullet feeds perfectly through both of my 1911 pistols, my Witnesses and my XD in .45. I also shoot it in .45 Colt in my Blackhawk and Marlin 1894 CB rifles. It's a great bullet.

Hope this helps.

That may be the next mold I get actually. I am fond of the 230 and love everything about it, I just wasn't sure if the lube grooves for the tumble lube style would give me enough lube when running through a lube sizer.... Lots of others have said it will work just fine, so only way to know is to do it!! How do the 200 Flats fly compared to the 230 on target, would you consider them a good target load, and a SD load or just for plinking?

The 200 gr. RNFP is as accurate as I am. I've put 10 rounds into a ragged hole at 15 yards from my 1911 with it. I consider it an average target bullet and general plinking bullet. I carry factory ammunition for everyday carry.

Hope this helps.

I have some tumble lube bullets for my 32 cal pistol. I run them through the sizer to get them to .312 and then tumble lube them.
I dont think I get enough lube on them from the star. Just enough to keep the die from leading.

Well to answer your question: I have pressure lubed TL bullets.
One of my favorite loads is a RanchDog design that I use normal lube on. It works Very well as far as shooting goes.
I can't say about a Star - I use a Lyman for the work.

I have doubts about a Star because of the lube pump.
With the Lyman lube still flows as the boolit moves in and out. it will fill the grooves even if the holes don't match.
That doesn't happen (normally) on the Star.

Run them thru the Star, with lube and shoot them. You'll probably lube 2 grooves anyway. I've done it with Ranch Dog .380 boolits. Like a charm. Mike
