Can you get in trouble over-patching?
that is, can you get into problems wrapping too much paper around a projectile?
If so, what can happen?
paper shaving in the chamber is not big deal as gun is a single shot. But can any other, more serious problems occur?

For example: I am loading a sized 12ga slug that all alone is correctly sized for my bore. i want to load it into a RMC brass which is way too thick to crimp, and is also over sized relative to the slug. Slug slips right in and right out of the hull.

So will it be a problem for me to paper wrap the slug so it fits tight into the case mouth, even though it is now- when patched- over size to the bore?

Thanks,

Is it a solid slug? If so I think you could well run into pressure problems if the finished patched slug is significantly over bore diameter (groove diameter if rifled).

Another potential problem might be shedding some of the paper in the chamber or bore which might be a problem for following rounds.

I have used thick brown paper to patch a Lyman Foster slugs up from 0.705" to 0.730" and that worked pretty well except I got occasional fliers I blamed on patch damage from rough hull interiors but...? In any case, the patching worked well with no pressure signs. It is possible the fliers were caused by slipping patches or catching the hull as crimp unfolded or...?

Point being that thick patch did work but I was patching to bore diameter with a hollow base slug so the slug could compress if things were over diameter. A solid slug will not compress so over size is oversize. I wouldn't worry about maybe 0.003" to 0.005" over but beyond that I wouldn't do it.

Can you size the brass down a bit for the slug length to provide some tension? Might take a custom sizer but it should work.

That's all I've got.

It is solid, but it has lube grooves.
Gun is a single shot, so plan to clear shaved paper in between each shot.
No real way to crimp or re-size. You dont think paper will squish/compress/move out of the way/etc as it moves from the forcing cone to the bore?
without going over-pressure, that is?

Don't patch. With my RMC brass cases I size case so that slug
has to be pushed in hard with press. It stays put and after firing
size it again. Cass are too thick to crimp without case damage.

If you patch and fire then case expands more and you have to
patch more. No good, or safe. And after 2-4 firings case so big
it won't extract. Object is with RMC case is fire and resize, and repeat
to work harden and toughen the whole brass case, which is machined
from half hard brass sytock...to act like a drawn case, with
increasing strength and reducing the expansion
on the bottom half of case from firing. Mouth will always expand
a little from firing so it got to be sized.Ed

What do you use to size the rmc brass?

Big ammomaster press and set of Hollywood 12ga dies I found
on ebay years ago, I cut tops out so cases get driven
out with rod, otherwise the half-hard brass rims would tear up.
Did same with the 12ga FH cases we made with bmg brass
as the rim pieces we put on were half-hard brass.

RMC sells sizing die body I thought, that you
drive case into it and drive it out with a rod.ED

The 12ga cowboy action dies RCBS has, only
work on the real thin wall Magtech brass the cowboy
shooters like to use.

RMC sells a mandrel that inserts inside the hull to tap it back into round, but I didnt see a neck/mouth sizer that would reduce the mouth diameter by the .007 i would need.

Any ideas?

You get them here to me and I'll shrink them down, and keep
eyes open for set of 12ga Hollywood dies. They have to go in
a 1.5" thread press. How many cases you got.Ed

I have ten.
But a few are loaded w your sabots, and they are really tight. i could just send a few and mark them for slugs.
