I have a Small Ring Mauser that i would like to mount a classic style scope on.
I dont want just any scope mount but a side smount so i can dismount it and use the iron sights from time to time.

EAW in Germany makes a fine specimen but want €440~$600, not gonna happen!
G&H has one for $400, not gonna happen either.
Finally there is Willimas that has one for $45, way more to my liking.

Anyone got any experience with this and can spread some do's or dont's?

Had a P-14 Enfield that had this type of Williams mount on it. It is big, clunky and the rings are held in place by a tension wheel on the under side of the mount. You must use their rings with their mount. I removed this mount and had the reciever tapped on top for conventional mounts and rings of my choice. Leupold makes quick take off mounts and rings that will allow for quick use of iron sights, I believe Weaver still makes a tip off mount.Robert

As you can see there is presiously little space for bases if i want to use the original iron sights.

I laid the rod over the iron sights and got .239" and then the sights are obscured by a base.

I have several weaver side mounts. I don't know if I have a mauser base. I did have some for a rounded receiver. The mount fits all the bases and the bases can be bought from weaver. I have one or two long mounts and some short ones. all fit the same bases. I would take 10.00 and shipping for one and include a base for a rounded receiver if I have one. pm me if you are interested

.

FWIW, the alloy Weaver scope mount bases have a shallow sighting trough down the middle, which makes the use of iron sights a snap with QD rings.

@ flounderman
The top of the base is tilted 45degrees to the right, am i right?
But the base only takes a special scope-ring-mount-thingy, right?
And the side mount cant use normal rings, right?

That renders my ($300) Leupold 1.25-4 European-30 scope a paperweight.
I would hate that.

@ pietro
I just tried with a milled down bit of Weaver base and @.183" it obscures the line of sight enough to render the iron sights useless.

The mounts pictured are for different applications. First mount pictured is for an offset mount and the second mount pictured is for an over-the-top mount. The first mount uses standard or offset rings, peculiar to that mount only. The second mount comes with, either, a short or long base for the rings. The base that mounts to the firearm is the same in both instances for the second pictured.

So in short the scope will be ofset to the left no matter what i do with the Weaver systems?

I cant figure Weavers www out!
They show this base:

With this rings:

And it looks like the rings has a claw on top and the two screws lock it in place.

Am i completly off here?

No.....With the first mount, yes if you want to,but over the top rings are available. I have the second mount, with the long ring base, on a Stevens/Savage model 325. It is an over- the-top mount only.

The first mount can be either a side mount, think M1 Garand scope mount...or...with different rings...an over-the-top mount. The second mount is solely an over-the-top mount. The angled base stays the same....it is the ring portion that can be changed...short or long....depending on the scope being used. It is confusing until you see them mounted on a firearm...and i stink at pictures!

If the scope is a 30 mm, I don't know if weaver makes a ring for the 30mm in the side mount. Using the weaver side mount, the scope is positioned in the center. the base is on the side and if you detach the ring portion of the mount, there is no obstruction on top of the receiver. The side mount is useful with a split bridge receiver, like the savage 340.
