View Full Version : How strong is a Rossi Break Open Rifle?

I have a Rossi (not Wizard) break open single shot in 45/410 (has small 410 sized frame). I would like to use it for deer hunting (Indiana has some strange laws, 45 Colt is legal, longer stuff like 30-30 is not). It is reasonably accurate (about like my Mossberg 500 slug gun), but not very potent. Can this rifle withstand hotter loads (such as ones for TC Contender or Ruger Blackhawk)? I don't plan to burn through 100 rounds per week of "balls to the wall" ammo, I can practice with softer shooting stuff and leave the hot stuff for Bambi. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I'm not familiar to that model but the H&R small frames arent super strong. Is it the Rossi copy of that? How far are your shots if you use a slower powder like R7 I bet you could shoot 255s around 1200fps from the rifle and not blow up. I shoot 255s at around 1400fps in a 7 3/4 barrel Ruger.

They are proofed to be safe with loads in the 16,000 pound range, I wouldn't go over say a 250 gr bullet at 1500 fps or so. The gun isn't going to come apart but it will get loose pretty quick with hot loads.

I have a small Rossi .410 and I would definitely steer clear of any of the hotter loads. The frame is cast steel, and not heat treated.

16KPSI..ouch. Yeah stick to standard 45LC data most of the Ruger data beats the pants off of that. But I think you can get a 200-255 around the 1100fps range. It would be fine to 100y, and a nice soft alloy would be sweet.

Don't let Rossi know that you are shooting handloads. I tried to get help with a mischambered Trifecta with a throat 1/2" too long and the guy told me the warranty was void because I shot handloads.

Good advice,i used to know a guy that worked for Dillion Precision in AZ and he said NEVER tell a company you shoot reloads if your trying to get something covered on a warranty.

Those dirtbags will pull every trick to not support thier firearms. I know from experience.

They are not dirt bags. Every firearms manufacturer I am aware of publishes disclaimers for handloads. They guarantee their product when used with industry standard loads. No manufacturer will give carte blanche to every user to stuff God only knows what into their gun. There isn't a gun made that can't be blown up by so damn fool. The auto makers will not guarantee their products for 500 miles of flat out abuse at Indy so why should we expect a gun maker to?
