Hi Folks,

My cousin got a good deal on a barreled action for an 1886 Winchester. The receiver has been recently color case hardened and the action gone through. He bought new wood for the rifle but on inspection determined that the rifling was very worn and faint. The caliber is 40-82 and he'd like to rechamber/rebore to 45-90. The rifle is designed for both cartridges and they are the same length.

Can Ya'll recommend somebody that does this type of gunsmithing? This rifle is most definitely not a collectors rifle but would be a good shooter if he can get the rechamber/rebore done.

Thanks Folks!

Go over to Marlin Owners Forum and search rebore and reline. JES Rebore (http://www.35caliber.com/) gets the nod for rebore, and John Taylor Machine (http://www.johntaylormachine.com/) for reline.

No experience with either.

Well, the Win M1886 is limited to a cartridge OAL of between 2.7" and 2.8" - matters not the specific cartridge or caliber. The 45-90 in the M1886 is considered somewhat of an express round, designed for slightly lighter (shorter) bullet going slightly faster. No matter who you get to to re-bore/re-chamber you might also consider the 45-70.

I had Jesse Ocumpah (JES Reboring) rebore a Marlin 336W to .375 Winchester, and couldn't have asked for a better job and price. The turnaround was 7 days at the time. I very highly recommend his work.

Hope this helps.

I have had John Taylor do numerous jobs for me. I have been completely satisfied with his quality of work, delivery and pricing. He is not the fastest turn-around, but reasonable and notably an honest workman of considerable skill and of good character, which is hard to find these days. I can recommend him without reservation.

I had J.E.S. take a 30-30 barrel to .444 and chamber, fair, fast, straight up. Would do again. Gtek
