I've been told the mags will give cleaner burns in the big case. I know for me, around 25 grains of 5744 leaves tons of skeletons, as does H4895 below 45 grains. Then again, mags are not shown in the manuals...

Anyone getting improvements using the mags?

Thanks.

I have used them for blackpowder only and really did not notice a difference. I have not tried them with smokeless though.

I initially used them for BP because that was the prevailing wisdom at the time. Now everyone recommends using either standard rifle primers, or even pistol primers. I've always used standard LR primers with smokeless.

I routinely use mag primers when using 4831. I tried them with 5744 and still seem to get about the same, large amount of unburned particles. Also, velocity variation seemed to increase when using mag primers with 5744.

I use magnum level primers with 5744 and 4895 in my 45-70 loads. They and the Dacron filler produce a cleaner burn but some unburned gr are always left at lower TD level pressures.

Used magnum primers and 3031 to win a number of 200 yd club matches years ago.

Federal 215 primers are all I use for the 45-70 along with a healthy dose of Swiss 1.5.
